I could be wrong, but I detect a theme running through those books.

Just read Nemesis - The Battle For Japan, by Max Hastings

Just thought I'd add my first post to this thread. I've recently read "Empire" and "Colossus" by Niall Ferguson, written about the British and American empires respectively (he explains why he considers America to have an empire in Colossus). Very interesting and easy to read, they are overviews rather than an in-depth look at one particular area. Definitely recommended.

Have just ordered "Cosmos" by Carl Sagan for something a bit different.

currently reading Alastair Reynolds - Terminal World. Should have it finished tonight, enjoying it but not as much as his Revelation Universe based books.

I've bought a Kindle and decided to download a few old books for free.

So far I've read Treasure Island, Alice In Wonderland, Robinson Crusoe and Grimm's Fairy Tales and now I'm reading Sharpe's Tigers (although I had to pay for that).

I recently read Chasm City, House or Suns, and Pushing Ice.

I'd say House of Suns was the best out of those three. I heard Terminal world was not so great but definitely House of Suns is very good indeed.

Just finished "Engines of Creation" by Eric Drexler. Fascinating and very clear introduction to nanotechnology, first published in 1986, but still as relevant today. I'm certainly not a qualified scientist, but Engines is a really easy book to read and understand. It's a little bit technical at the start, but nothing I couldn't comprehend having enjoyed Chemistry and Biology through high school.

Anyone else here who's read it or other books like it? Do you have any recommendations? I'd be interested in something similar.

Another vote for House of Suns.

If you're after more sci-fi then Surface Detail (Iain M Banks) and The Technician (Neal Asher) were both awesome.

I've just read "The Life of Pi", and "The Strange Case of the Dog in the Night-time". Both very good and very unusual.

I've had a little time off so got to actually read House Of Suns, thought it was good but preferred previous Reynolds books to be honest.

Started reading Winds Of Dune, hope it lives up to Dune.

I came by a complete collection of Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta novels. Just started the 11th, with a few more to go.

Problem is, I find Scarpetta such an annoying character. If it wasn't for Marino the cop I'd give up

I've recently discovered Mark Gimenez. He is similar to John Graham, legal dramas. First 2 books I could hardly put down, on his 3rd now and very good.

Just read Liar's Poker myself. One of the most entertaining books I've read in a long time! Michael Lewis is a great writer.

Cool

Last book I read was in the Autumn, 'The Forever War' by Joe Haldeman. A very interesting story.

I am currently reading 'Treasure Island' after seeing the latest version on Sky. Certainly makes you think a bit harder reading prose from a long time ago!

My last book was Following Atticus, by Tom Ryan, great little read about how a dog changed a mans life, it's a true story and one of the best books I've ever read I'm now listening to the audio book, well worth getting and it's pretty cheap to boot just don't let your missus read it or she will be in tears

This book took me AGES to read but just finished it thismorning. Very very awesome book, loved it. Just ordered the second in the Void trilogy but before I start it I'm going to take a break from Sci-Fi and read The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes as I found it free on Amazon's Kindle store.
