Put it like this, it's not a question of 'if' but 'when'.

I do think a fair bit of mechanical sympathy does help though.

Indeed. At least we can all 'draw' from that bit of comfort.

+1

I NEVER launch. And don't slam home gearchanges either.

@ c.330+ lb ft since Nov 2010, and no funny noises/graunches from my c.50k miles TY754...... So far!...

I ran an estimated 400/400 on a 2.1 with 20g and methanol and the TY54 box lasted 250 miles and ate 5th

Hmmmm

Food for thought

At these kind of power outputs (400+) The short ratio Type R/RA box must be mega fun !

Indeed.

I test drove my mate's previous Type R STi 5 (prior to him buying it), and even at its dyno'd 267bhp (a bit down on the factory 276), the gearing made it feel mental!

God knows what c.380+/380+ would feel like!

I know its not a 5 speed but my 45k 6 speed jdm box lasted about 5k and 6 trackdays at 460/460 before I broke synchros/selector fingers/selector rods so anything can be broken if abused. I ran it on Silkolene silktrans oil too which aint cheap!!

Linky???

Im running a 5 speed at the moment with 210k kms on a sti wagon with ej257 with a fresh forged engine the 2.5 conversion was done at 159k kms. I'm only running actuator pressure at the moment as I want to get a proper map on it (Autronic Ecu).Id say I'll destroy the box on dyno knowing my luck

Was running 350ft/lb torque before the build at 1.5 bar. The box is noisey though in some gears, oil is clean and no selection problems whatsoever. Play it by year and see

Yeah, that's why - if you can find/afford one - to get the Hawkeye 6sp - much stronger synchros (which are the weakest link, I'm led to believe?)

But I'm always waiting for it to happen, which in it's self can be quite worrying if I'm far from home.
Excellent - that's exactly the same box, isn't it Dunk after I passed it on to you. pretty good test, but yep I think the 2.35 may be a step too far

yup it's still the same box and it's still holding on in there, Im not overly abusive with it though which I do think has helped.

I do miss the short ratio though.

Out of interest, coinsidering the 6 speed conversion costs 2K +

Can something not been done to strengthen the 5 speed at around the same price ?

Not really.

As it's the physical extra width of the 6-sp's teeth, i.e. wider cogs, that give the gears the extra strength and greater torque-handling capacity.

'Only' 3 (worthwhile) upgrade options available:-

1st - OEM New Age 6-sp (esp. the Hawkeye's - stronger synchros and strongest all round).

2nd - Scooby Clinic's 5-sp replacement gear set (enthusiastically endorsed by API David )

3rd - PPG 5-sp replacement gear set (but doesn't come with a 5th - but think you can pay extra for it?)

I've ran my 2003 wrx with various maps above 350 hp for 24k miles now. Four full track days and a RWB at santa pod (6 runs).

Lariest map was 390ftlbs (on part e85).

We've got two late model 6 speed Dccd 2008 hatch boxes available at the moment. Complete kit with prop, linkage, mounting, clutch fork, stump shafts 3.9 ratio with 1 : 1 drops meaning 3.9 required for the rear. Either R160 or R180 can be provided at extra cost. Guaranteed boxes.

£2650.00 + VAT plus a diff if you need.

Form a queue here guys.

Fab!

* David, are these even stronger than the previous gen. Hawkeye's box?

* Is there a non-DCCD version - i.e. regular 50:50 split - of the MY08 Hatch's 6-sp, too?

* So, everything is included in the kit for a "drive in/drive out" swap over (inc. either the 3.9:1 R160 or R180 rear diff, as needed)? How much for the diff on top?

I think it all depends on driving style. You can use 400bhp well without ragging the gearbox. There is always exceptions to all rules but in general if your 350+ then put a little aside each month towards a new box just incase lol

John. No, not obviously stronger, there are differences though but nothing that significantly changes much and all hatch boxes have the carbon coated synchro rings fitted as standard.

ALL UK supplied 6 speeds were dccd from WR1 onwards. These ones have a near as dammit 50 /50 split All hatch 6 speeders are 3.9 front 3.9 rear.

The gearbox kit as above is everything you need. Rear diff is extra at £350.00 + VAT [ £420.00 inc ] for a viscous R160 rebuilt / checked here. R180 rear diff with Suretrack - rebuilt / checked as above is £750.00 + VAT [ £900.00 inc ]

R180 3.9's are really hard to get these days and the price reflects the rarity value.

R180 diff prices have been artificially inflated, picked up a rebuilt one from ebay for £250 posted from Iceland
