the old ambit modems are only capable of 20mb max if its changed to a sh he can go up to 50mb at no extra cost

Bits of truth mixed in there.

The older modems are limited to docsis2 which does indeed limited their speed, however the speed he gets is determined by the level of service he has, so unless he gets that updated he will only ever get the speed he has now. If he was on a 50mb profile the modem would reject the configuration file.

The modems, VMNG300 and superhub range are yet to be maxed out by Virgin and each can easily support the current fastest speed of 152mb.

Small world, he used to clean my Scooby, does both my cars regularly and has been to my house.
