Wickes or Jewsons - Bulk buying shingle or aggregate
I want to cover an area about 20' x30' at the end of my garden. It is mainly concreted and relatively even, and it needs to look look good to the casual observer coming to view my house which is up for sale.
Wickes sells pea shingle at about £35 for a 'Jumbo' bag but would give me absolutely no idea how much i would get in each bag because of the Trade Descriptions Act, and variable moisture content!!
Anyone able to shed any light on the likely weight or that of the Jewson 'bulk bag' which I assume will lead to a similiar conversation though they are shut at the moment.
Builders merchant's "bulk bags" are typically around 750kgs.
Given the quantity you are likely to need, I think it would probably work out cheaper for you to get a bulk load delivered either through a builders merchant, or direct from a stone merchant.
To get a decent cover, I'd say 100mm thick, so that's 60 x 0.1 = 6m3 (could reduce this if you're not going to be parking on it).
I'm guessing about 1.7tonnes/m3 if you want an open stone like pea gravel, so...
6 x 1.7 = ~10 tonnes of stone.
It would be best to put some terram (geotextile) under the stone to stop it puddling into the soil underneath (especially if you are thinking of parking on it). It will also prevent weeds growing through.
10 Tonnes.... ouch!! Thats a lot of wheelbarrow loads using the service road as i have no access thru the house!!
Not going to park on it, or walk on it as that area of my garden is unused, (til the local cats get wind) just want it to look better than it does now.
Guess prospective buyers may fancy a mooch across it though....
