Default Washing Machine Waste? Pipe Runs?

Hi all,

I have a problem where I have found out my washing machine is putting waste water into the 'surface water' sewage pipes. Apparantly there has been lots of contamination from our estate from people having extensions, and the builders/plumbers connection into wrong drains. I am one of them!

My washing machine is in the garage. The nearest 'foul water' drain is at the back of my kitchen (kitchen sink/dishwasher water empties here). My only idea is to go out through the garage wall at washing machine location, there is then a 6m run down the house, a 90 degree bend and then a further 1.5m to the drain. Would it be ok to run a 40mm waste pipe this distance witout a problem? I know there should be about 25mm for 1m drop/gradient along the way.

I'm not sure what the regs are and obviously want to stay on the right side!

Thanks for any input! I need to get it sorted next weekend!

Building regs say minimum drop 18mm/m for waste. This is statutory, and could get theoretically pulled by a building control officer or someone.

25mm/m drop would be fine, if it works in terms of available height at that rate.

This is from BS EN 12056 on drainage limits to do with washing machines:

Diameter (DN) 40

Min Trap Seal Depth: 75 mm

Max Length of Pipe from trap to outlet stack: 3.0m

Pipe Gradient: 1.8 to 4.4 %

Max Drop: 1.5m

The regs suggest the length of the run is a bit excessive at 7.5m plus. What you could do is take the 40 from the washing machine through the wall, then transform to a 50 for the main run, this should give it a bit extra capacity and will minimise any potential problems.

Bear in mind the regs, strictly speaking, are guidance only. The only real thing to comply with is the 18mm/m drop. You could try a 40 waste and it would probably work fine.

I still haven't sorted this out. I'm wary of the 3.0m max run length in the standards. My run is going to be about 7m in total length. I don't want to put the work in to find it won't empty the washing machine properly. Does it make any difference on the BS allowed run length if I'm discharging into a gulley drain rather than joining direct into the soil stack?

tbh, you shouldn't have trouble with it, it's only water after all, that comes out of it, and water will run away down a 1 in 1000 incline. Probably even less.

I'd go for it, put in the best drop you can, but just make sure it DOES drop over it's ENTIRE length, you don't want any uphill sections
