B&D: Budget/DIYer. Ok if you get it for a decent price
Dewalt: Poor durability, Only good for premium DIY, Cordless items have appaullingly poor battery capacities for the prices, and crappy chucks.
Hitachi and Makita for me, or a high end (blue) Bosch for cordless. Although the green Bosch corded power tools tools are fine.

Funnily enough, the top Wickes power tools are worth a look.
They aim to sell a tool at least as good as it's competitors, and carry a good guarantee.
I have two SDS plus drills, a Bosch and an AEG, both are brilliant. The Bosch jigsaw I have in France, (bought in the UK), is MUCH better than the B&D Pro one I have in the UK.

black and decker and dewalt are all made at the same factory in spennymoor ,county durham about 5miles away from me . i use a dewalt xrp 18v cordless drill everyday with a 2.6 amp/hour battery and i am more than happy with it. cost aroud £300 if i remember correctly. dewalts quality has supposedly gone down a bit since being took over. but a lot of the dewalt gear i use for my job (joiner) has never let me down. have a few makita tools which i rate highly along with bosch too
it all depends on what you require from the tools you purchase ie diy or trade use

I've noticed recently that you can now buy Li-Ion batteries for tools that use NiCad and NiMH batteries. DeWalt are one of the ones selling them, BUT: they are almost the price of a complete new drill etc WITH Li-Ion batteries

I use Dewalt tools at work and have no problem with them, 18vlt and 24vlt but my main tools are always Hilti, they may be more money but they are the best.

DeWalt used to be brilliant, but these days have been left standing by Makita (especially in the cordless dept. with their Li-ion kit). For corded stuff Metabo IMO are bulletproof though, being a subsidiary of Festool. For general DIY stuff, either DeWalt or B+D will probably suffice, but as has been said they are one and the same, and pretty heavy to use in comparision to other makes.
over 5 years ago when i moved out of the family home and into my own place, my dad bought me a B&D cordless drill/driver and a corded hammer action drill. Both are still going strong today with only minor DIY useage. The cordless drill/driver is hopeless at being a drill but a great driver even thou the battery is getting on a bit.
Can't complain but like the makita stuff!

I've got plenty of dewalt kit and very happy with it. Continue to look at their kit, as it seems to work and last, although people are persuading me to look at Makita.
i use a dewalt 18v xrp every day (sparky), only thing gone wrong is brushes, but that is normal with most tools. only £10 and 10 mins work to change.
my tools are- 110v sds is hilti, 36v, 24v and 12v bosch blue. makita circ saw. also got in garage- 24v milwaukee and 36v and 14v hilti, 110v bosch, 14v dewalt.
personally i wouldn't buy B&D or wickes. i'd go for- hilti, bosch, makita, milwaukee, metabo
It had to happen, after a weekend of constant use and a little abuse both my Bosch blues gave up, the brushes have burnt out on both one has melted the case where the brushes have arced out, not bad for 25 years use, i cant complain.
