Update.

Sorry but I have been away from the Scoobynet forum for a few months.

Thanks for the help regarding this thread.

All sorted now.

The whining noise was not caused by the centre diff or indeed any part of the transmission.

It was apparently caused by the tyres.

The tyres fitted were Geolandar 900's . The tyres all had @ 5mm of even tread on them so we didn't thinkk that the tyres were winding up the diffs.

As a last resort after reading a post somewhere on one of the Scooby forums I borrowed a spare set of tyres and alloys from my friend, fitted them and amazingly the noise was gone.

The Geolandars were removed never to be used again.

My forester is now wearing a set of 215/55/17 Dunlop Winter Sport 3D's.

The nearside brake drum has had the ridge removed, the shoes, springs, adjuster and the handbrake strut and tone ring were all replaced.

The only unwanted noise now seems to be a tinny rattling under acceleration apparently coming from the heat shield.

Thanks Again.
