That assumes you get everything you need for a 6 speed conversion for £1500, and don't mind adding a shed load of weight, and having short gearing !

Ive just gone for ppg kit rather than six speed. I hate the short ratios 1to 4 so spent a bit more and got what I wanted and Im sure in the long run its going to stronger than a 6 speeder. Speak to Mark at Lateral, he gave me some good advice on which way to go.

They're quite long, not dissimilar to a UK 5 speed - its best to get a UK 5th if the box doesn't have one already

Not sure 5 speed PPG kit will be stronger in long run than 6 speed as latter has stronger case, bigger shafts and an oil pump I believe - although I know 6 speed syncros can be a little weak. Could be wrong mind...

Anyone know the ACTUAL weight difference (circa at least) between these two boxes ? A ppg really doesnt appeal to me. Seems like hard work and i'm really not running enough power to kill a 6spd.
So unless its a substantial difference . . . I couldnt really justify the cost.

I think you will find it to be 30 to 35 Kg, or half a person equivellent.
Today I drove on a sprint track a UK turbo with a helical/synchro ppg, and what a nice box it was too. The whine from the gears was almost zero, and the change as sweet as a nut. It could have been a stock UK box.
I am sure you would find the short 1 to 4 gears of the 6 speeder a pain.
That weight gain is huge for a competition car to tolerate, but for a road car, the 6 speeder could work well I feel.
My Sti V3 is a race car, so a ppg is the only way forward.

Well my car is gonna be for drag racing etc so ppg deff seems the way for me.
Don't spose you know the weight of a standard fly wheel roughly do you?
No real reason just wanted to know?

Ahh thats neither here nor there . . . Its only a quick - ish road car.
I'm not looking to set any land speed records im afraid.
Why is the short ratios 1-4 considered such a problem . . Its an extra change on the strip but in a fast road car ?? Does'nt the shorter ratios help it along abit also??
Apologies if im stealing the thread here

That is why i say for a road car the 6 speeder is quite nice, esp the ones i have driven (one a Litchfield Spec C) great on the road imho, BUT an extra change when getting going seriously is a major hinderence, and i would take note of AndyF's comments.

Ive got a 6 speed uk in my car ,around 550bhp ,love it on the road ,i use the car on the 1/4 ,only problem i have found is 1st gear is a bit short but the rest seem o.k.
With the 6 speed you may have an extra gear change but if the ratios are shorter then surely a 6 speed should accelerate faster ?

My criticism of the 6sp is that once you have increased power the close ratios mean you seem to spend as much time changing gear as you spend in-gear.

3K for a nice ppg v 1.8K for a 6 speeder and 30Kg odd extra.
As said not really a prob on a road car (how heavy is a tank of fuel, I barely notice a performance drop from full to empty on the road), but in a race car that weight is a real issue, and so is multiple gearchanging, you leave time everywhere that you can't make up later esp on speed events that are so short to begin with.
For a road car the 6 speeder is a good option imho and solid too. You may have to change the rear diff of course, but that is just a bit of hard work.

Personally I love my UK six speed on my classic.
I'm about to throw a 550bhp 2.5 at it (all done bar the mapping). With 2 litres and 350bhp I loved it and it made the car for me. It will be interesting to see what its like with more power, torque and a differently revving engine.
However its only ever going to be a road car with the odd quarter mile and track days so the extra weight is not really a concern.
Time will tell.
