Is there a good cause for concern if the engine has had bearing failure? I imagine that theres a possibility of swarf in the oil galleries etc but can this be cleaned out enough to not cause future issues? I am talking a totally bare block and not using any old parts other than the block halves.

Any other advice on what to look out for when buying a second hand bare block?

IIRC there should be no issue, Gaz.

The problems arise when people try and re-use the crank, if memory serves.

The crankcases are the easiest part of the engine to clean once the oil gallery bungs are out.
Provided the main bearings have not spun in the journals/saddles of the crankcases, then it should be usable.

First thing to check is that you have a matching pair of crankcases - check the pairing number stamped on the top of the crankcases (rear pair of numbers).




Then check for liner cracks,stripped out threads,deck face for damage/warp etc etc.
