How long does your oil take to get to driving temp

I been having a few strange readings from my defi oil temp gauge.
sometimes it takes ages to get to around the 70-80c,then when you put your foot down it drops to around 50-60c!!!

I timed it yesterday and it took 20 minutes to get to 75c,is this normal for you?

hi, mine is up to temp in around 6 miles cruising at about 50mph

Is that reading from your oil temp gauge? or your water temp on the dash?

oil temp gauge taken from a sandwich plate on the oil filter

I doubt it's water temp, my water temp on the dash takes around 1 1/2 miles to hit full temp.

Ye i know mate but just checking,I asked a mechanic the other day and he told me to look at the water temp,when that gets hot,the oil is hot

i thought the oil took longer to warm up due to it being thicker,thats why i got an oil temp gauge.

It does mate,a lot longer!

5 miles or 7-10 minutes taken from oil sandwich plate sensor.

In the summer it is 6 miles or more before the oil gets to 75-80 C on my Classics and that is the bottom temperature I want it at.
Earlier today with ambient at 1-2 C I noticed that after 17 miles at no more than 70 mph the temp had not yet breached 80C.

Sack your mechanic

my oil takes roughly 7 miles to get up to a decent temp.
water takes about a mile

i just let mine idle for about 30 sec then let the engine warm up whilst driving that way u know the oil will be at the right temp. i should get oil guage rely

As Harvey says, oil temp time depends on ambient temps.

What I have noticed is that my oil temp gauge only starts to move (from the bottom 50c) once the water temp gauge hits normal (about 1-2 miles). It then takes anything from another 3-5 miles to hit 80c, with a normal driving temp of ~90c.

This is the oe Modein (sp?) water-oil cooler/warmer doing it's job (to a point as a cooler IMHO..).

I run Motul 300v 10w 40 btw, which is also a major factor in oil temp times. Thicker oil= longer warm up..!

So basically it depends on a number of factors, but at least 5 mins and maybe more like 10+ in colder winter months.
