Question Walbro 255lph fuel pump question

Hi guys, I've just had a Walbro 255lph fuel pump fitted (ready for my remap next weekend!) and I just wanted to ask other people on here that have had one fitted about the noise it's making! It's very loud & 'whiney' compared to the standard pump. Is this normal? I thought a fuel pump would only wine if it was struggling? I took a quick vid of what it sounded like when I got home from the garage earlier........

Scoobaru :: MAH00279.flv video by simonds1 - Photobucket

Something interesting tho.....I went to go out later then.....started the car.....absolutely no whining....just sounded like normal. So I thought hmm it's okay now. But when I got to where I was going....whining again. Same thing on the way home then.....started the car to leave and no whining at all.....by the time I got home it was whining. This can't be normal surely?

Car drives absolutely fine, and you can't really notice the whining while ur driving, so I'm not too bothered about it really.....unless it's fecked of course!!

Your opinions would be greatly appreciated, cheers guys

You need one of these, like the walbro only you don't hear it.

Right then guys, how about this for strange......

I have normally done pretty much EXACTLY 75 miles everytime I get down to the first marker on the fuel gauge. So when I've got 3 quarters of a tank left sorta thing. Then always around 150 miles when I get down to half a tank. Today I've filled up (first time since new walbro fuel pump), and have just done 112 miles by the time I've got to the first marker!! At the rate that's going....I'm gonna get 224 miles out of half a tank?! So that's 448 miles out of a tank?! This seems ridiculous to me, and I'm wondering if the fuel pump whining does mean it's struggling, so it's using a lot less fuel cuz it's pumping less fuel?

Car seems normal to drive tho

it does sound strange as most folks will get around 300-350 from a full tank i get around 110 miles for £20 so full tank will be 330 if nothings wrong then dont knock it a lot of people on here would need an extra tank fitted to get them figures.

They do humm and it does sort of come and go as the speed (3) the pump runs at is controlled by the ECU (newage anyhow, not sure about classic, but assume the same?) based on fuel demand/load etc.

Mine has recently become VERY noisy at time's, usually after a spirited run when coming off the throttle. It's SOooo loud the whole cabin seems to reverberate. It's been in around 3 yrs now so maybe it's getting tired.. They do eventually start to tire, so something to bear in mind..!

Cheers for all your replies guys, it's much appreciated! I think I've decided it's okay and I'm just being paranoid about the noise it's making. I don't understand the huge difference in fuel economy tho, but as legacytt said.....if there's nothing wrong then don't knock it! All I was worried about is the possibility that the car was running lean (if the pump was struggling or something) because I understand this is very bad for imprezas? One of my friends assures me that my check engine light would come on if the car was running lean tho?

Snap! I get sick of hearing about everyone who gets 300+ miles out of a tank. Even spen the week once driving REALLY calmly, like off boost all the time etc, to see if it made a difference. It did, but hardly any, not enough to be worth having no fun driving.

I just had a walbro fitted yesterday as me other one gave up the ghost. Pickin car up today - hope it's not too noisy! Although I do hope I get some extra MPG!!

It sounds like the tank level sensor was bent when the 255 pump was put in.

Got the remap done, had a 5 hour drive home and was driving like a legend (not sensibly!), and had done 328 miles when I came to fill up

Maybe you've got a hole in ur fuel tank?!? lol
