Default ECU for 1994 JDM Import Wagon - Target 300bhp

Hi,

Could anyone advise me on the most cost effective ECU replacement / upgrade for my WRX . Its running virtually standard at the moment but with a de-cat downpipe and 3 inch Scorpion system (also high flow panel air filter)

I want to get to around 300bhp and it will be used for occassional sprint events. The ECU at the moment is the standard V5.
Are the Mines ECU's worth a shot?
Also what is the lowest final drive ratio i can run? acceleration is my real aim!

Any help much appreciated

Cheers
Andy T

Just out of interest - what are the Mines ECU's like? ive heard they run very agressive ignition timings?

Im going with the Enduring Solutions - im just trying to get upto speed with the WRX scene in general as im totally new to them (owned my first WRX now for a couple of months and my only regret is i didnt get one years ago!!)

i have a minesz4 ecu and the fueling ect is perfect on vpower and i boost at 1.1bar. I have full decat and made 270hp on the rollers last week. But the mid range torque and power are very good and thats where ya want it for the roads imo !

hi i have a wrx wagon with standard maff and map sensor and am running around 320bhp
but i believe the best bet ecu wise is to pick up a second hand apexi unit with commander you can easily source them for 400quid or under and then it is only 200quid fitted and mapped it also allows extra features than standard ecu and is easily sold should you wish to change

injectors can reach 300bhp and map sensor is rated upto 1.2bar iirc but if you get a remappable ecu then you can just get bigger injectors and a later model MAP sensor fitted.
Your turbo may struggle to make 300bhp though as the td04 limits are around 280bhp although i do know of a couple of wagons that did make 300bhp with the td04 fitted.

Don't forget you if you are going to be increasiing power/torque you are putting a lot more strain on a 16 year car and transmission.

Personally before starting your modding i would get the car on a rolling road for a health check.

i was running standard injectors and standard maf but i had to put a map sensor of a my97 so i could raise the boost over the 1.2 bar limit thats how i got the 1.34bar so personally i wouldnt go for an apexi coz ive you want to raise your boost over the 1.2 bar limit of the map sensor you will have to buy a electronic boost controller which is more money ive had both apexi and esl and the esl give me better results. the only good thing i found with the apexi is that the commander gives you some good info about how your car is running eg. engine knock things like that.

The apexi may tell you about engine knock but it does feck all if it is knocking.
The ESL board will allow you to go mafless as well

You can pick up a td05 for £100, de-cat down pipe £100, FMIC £300 or cheaper (Apex have some going cheap) Polar Performance chip £95 (look out for Scott's auctions on ebay) and a dawes device. Set boost on the dawes device to give 1.1 bar, and my 1995 WRX made 303bhp / 290 ft/lbs torque. This keeps your standard ecu with all its safety features.

300 or just above will be the limit on this set up. The 380 cc injectors can't go much higher but your std map sensor will be fine. The chip would raise boost cut to 1.2 bar I believe.

If you are after acceleration though you may be onto a loser from the start with a wagon. They are heavier than the saloons, so will need more power/torque just to accelerate at the same pace as a saloon. Fitting an RA box would help due to the lower ratios.
