Default Cleaning a K&N cone filter

Hi

I've got a K&N cone filter on the end of my cold air feed and it needed a clean.*

I got the K&N cleaning kit and I followed the instruction but doesn't seem that clean still. I know it never goes back to the original colour, it's just some dirt is still coming of in my hands. I have done the process twice but just seems that it needs to be aggravated while cleaning. *

The instructions never mention about using a soft*brush with the cleaner, has anyone done this? Or will it damage the fragile frame?

Any tips or help please

Cheers

I always used hot soapy water, soft brush and then a good hose down followed by a good dry overnight in the airing cupboard and a very light oiling
You can buy replacement cones for not a lot of money IIRC

Compressed air from inside to out, or warm water.

BUT make sure you re-oil after, as cleaning them removes the oil.

You should squirt the cleaning solution down the inside of the filter as well as the outside, making sure it goes along each pleat, and you can use a tooth brush to work the solution in to the filter. After about 10 mins you should rinse the filter in warm water from the inside 1st.The water should be black and when you have done it correctly your cotton gauze in the filter should be white.K & N recommend you dont use compressed air. Then its just a simple case of allowing it to dry naturally and reoiling it .When you have done this it should look exactly like a brand spanking new filter .

I also found it was a lot easier to reoil the filter using the aerosol spray than the solution that comes with the kit.

Probably a stupid question, but why do you have to re-oil them? Is it to stop moisture getting through?

The oil traps the dirt. Without the oil most of the smaller dirt will get through.

Trouble is oil and MAF's don't mix well, so don't go over the top when oiling

brill, thanks for all the advice guys - very helpful.

I'll give the toothbrush a go as I'm pretty sure thats the little extra it needs. Although I do like the dishwasher idea, not sure the wife will be too happy.

I'll defo make sure I do the oiling and not too much.

Thanks for the replies.

Cheers

Just picked the first one so you may be able to find it cheaper.

Stu, they're £50-£60 a pop. I was thinking of cleaning it a couple of times a year.

I gave the warm fairy liquid a go and was amazed what came out.

Remember guys, I bought the K&N kit and followed all the instructions and this still came out:

The pic's don't do the dirt justice. Moral of the story is, all you need is fairy liquid and a old soft brush. I suppose its still buying the kit just for the filter oil.

Cheers guys
