Default NITRAC PERFORMANCE BRAKE DISC & PADS GB

NITRAC BRAKE DISC & EBC PADS GROUP BUY

I'm about to replace my my03 sti's front brake discs and pads. The discs have lasted for ages (I'm sure the first owner changed them, but I can't find anything on his old bills) and the pads have lasted me 14 months (redstuff)
My driving is mainly fast cross country, and I don't use the brakes that much, prefering to read the road ahead, and match speed with conditions. I've done a couple of track days over the last year, but again, very steady and very sympathetic to the car.
So, after having a very good look around, and with a budget of less than £500 inc fitting, I've settled on Nitrac Performance Brake Discs discs and redstuff pads.
Now, I've looked into the way Nitrac treat the discs, and if you do a search on NASIOC - The North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club, you'll see that the process of freezing the discs are getting a lot of good reviews. The process has been used in motorsport for ages, and the benefits seem to be longer life and less wear, which is just perfect for a brake disc. So, to get this group buy rolling, here's the plan:
I'm in contact with Nitrac via Alan at the main office in Macc, and this is the deal he's able to put together:
Nitrac first and foremost do discs, so, if we can order up to 10 sets of discs, the discount will be 15%.
11 - 20 sets and the discount rises to 20%
21 or greater, and the discount is a massive 25% off.
Here are the prices for the most popular discs per pair; (not inc vat)
my03 sti 01 - 04 1994cc (326mm Disc)
cross grooved £284.54
drilled and grooved £301.36
drilled £305.24
8 groove £284.54
12 groove £293.60
16 groove £303.95
long life £138.00

my96 - 00 wrx 2.0 Turbo 4WD (295mm Disc)
cross grooved £140.64
drilled and grooved £157.46
drilled £161.34
8 groove £140.64
12 groove £149.70
16 groove £160.05
long life £104.88

my94 - 98 Turbo 2000 4WD (277mm Disc)
cross grooved £119.30
drilled and grooved £136.12
drilled £140.00
8 groove £119.30
12 groove £128.36
16 groove £138.71
long life £84.18
All other fitments are available, post your requirements on here if it's not listed above.

Pad prices are the following, ONLY IF ORDERED WITH DISCS:
FRONT PADS
Model/Year/ "Red Stuff" pads/Price Inc Vat/"Yellow Stuff" Pads/Price Inc Vat

2.0 Turbo 96-98 / DP31134C /£67.78 / DP41134R / £74.29
2.0 Turbo (UK) 98-2002/ DP31200C / £88.34 / DP41200R / £91.66
2.0 Turbo WRX 2001-2005/ DP31200C / £88.34 / DP41200R / £91.66
2.0 Turbo WRX STi 2002-2005/ DP31210C / £88.34 / DP41210R / £91.66
2.5 Turbo STi 2006-/ DP31210C / £88.34 / DP41210R / £91.66
2.5 Turbo WRX 2006-/ DP31200C / £88.34 / DP41200R / £91.66

REAR PADS

"Red Stuff" pads /Price Inc Vat / "Yellow Stuff" Pads /Price Inc Vat

DP3821C / £53.23 / DP4821R / £58.21
DP31293C / £62.41 / DP41293R / £68.72
DP3826C / £63.09 / DP4826R / £77.35
DP31538C / £44.81 / DP41538R / £48.63
DP3826C / £63.09 / DP4826R / £77.35

So for me, a my03 sti set of grooved and drilled discs retail at £301.36 + vat = £354 - 15% = £301, then add the £88 for some pads and that lot comes to £388 all inc. Delivery will be £12, total £400 for something that should last at least 4 times longer than the equivalent ebc discs.
I'm running this GB until the end of August, after that date, the GB will be closed and the discount added to the amount of people who've ordered at that point. I'll start the ball rolling:

1. cw42 my03 sti front drilled and grooved ebc redstuff pads
2.

great timing. i want to at least change the pads on mine. Just figuring out if i've got the cash to get better calipers (4 pots instead of 2), in which case i'll need some discs too. as soon as i've worked it out i'll get my name down. What's the payment method?

Default NITRAC discs

I am a director of Nitrac Ltd, and I hope no-one will mind me adding a bit of information on NITRAC discs for those who do not know us. Nitrac Ltd. is a small specialist company, and frankly we do not have the resources to invest in large advertising budgets, unlike some of the competition. However, the discs we produce ARE NOT THE SAME AS ANY OTHER DISCS currently on the uk market. They are the only discs which are Cryogenically treated, using a process we have developed over 10 years or more in treating literally thousands of discs for competition purposes.

Deep Cryogenic treatment is a thermal process for metals which improves the microstructure of the metal itself. In the case of cast-iron brake discs what you get is a component which has much better thermo-dynamic performance, greater torsional strength, abrasion resistance, and resistance to warping, scoring, cracking, and to a lesser extent, rusting. For the user this means a disc which performs better and in racing conditions lasts 2.5 - 3 times as long as an untreated disc. In fast road use you will get 3 to 4 times the life. Surprisingly, you also get reduced pad wear, 30% in racing use, up to 50% or more on the road. The discs are ideal for those who like to take their car on the track, and our warranty is not invalidated by such use. These discs really are vastly superior to anything else currently on the UK market at anywhere near these prices.

This is not marketing hype, if you Google "Cryogenic Treatment" or "Cryogenic Tempering" you will get hundreds of hits, mostly from US Cryogenic treatment companies, but if you search carefully you will find quite a few academic papers describing the process and the results it can achieve. I'll be happy to provide copies of such papers, track tests, etc, if you can't find them yourself.

Finally, we have cut our costs to the bone in order to bring these discs to the market at a very competitive price, so that people could find out for themselves just how good they are, but I don't know how much longer we can afford to do so. I would advise you to grab a bargain while you can!

Payment will be to Nitrac direct once the GB has closed.
I'd agree with you on the yellowstuff pads too, had a set on my classic, and they were quicker up to temp than the reds, and bit harder too.

Thanks for your input Alan. Much better at explaining it than me

Yes. We can also supply rear discs, and obviously the same discounts apply. Also note that the different discounts depnd on the number of sets of discs bought, not the number of people buying them. So if 6 people bought a full set of front & rear discs, the 20% discount would kick in.

Sorry Steve, been busy elsewhere I'll give alan a nudge and see if he can help you with the decision

I'm posting up in a mo on the MLR as these discs and pads are just as well suited to the slower 4 wheel drive rally monsters too . If we get some takers over there, then the price will come down over here
I'll keep both threads updated over the next month

Steve, Chris has nudged me! The question of which are the best discs depends what you are going to use the car for. All of our discs are 3 times tougher than anything else out there anyway, but if you intend to do a lot of track days I would suggest you go for the grooved only, as they are inherently stronger than the drilled discs. The purpose of the drilling is to assist in cooling, but as NITRAC discs run cooler anyway, there is little advantage, and all our race customers go for the grooved variety. If you only do the occasional track day, then really it is a matter of personal preference, as it would be extremely difficult to detect any difference in performance outside a race track! As to the number of grooves, generally speaking endurance racers go for 8 grooves, and the short track racers go for 16, so I think you can draw your own conclusions from that!! Sorry it is so long but I hope that helps

Any pics of different types?

Will need full set of discs all round for an '04 STI,,are the rears any cheaper?

Will have the blue fella upto around the 400 break mark next month, and am not sure whether to go for the red or yellow pads,,,suggestions?

Also will the grooves become and remain rusty looking?

Dave.

I like the sound of introducing these babies to the lads,,just hope I remember how to explain there creation!!

Dave,
Glad you found the pictures. As to rust in the grooves, if a car is used regularly, this should not be a problem. Cryo treated discs rust less anyway!

Mackers,
Black phosphate coated discs are £15 per pair extra. The black will wear off the braking surfaces within a few miles but it helps the appearance and keeps the rust off the rest off the disc. There are no performance benefits.

Whats the price on an '04 STI clutch to handle 400+ bhp when buying a full set of discs and pads?
Also do Nitrac make frozen lightweight flywheels to suit?

Mackers,
I don't have the prices of clutches to hand, but I'll come back to you on that tomorrow. As to flywheels, you raise an interesting question. We have been looking at using Cryo treatment to develop a heavy duty clutch, but in order to do that you need to treat both the pressure plate components and the flywheel, but flywheels are not a regular replacement item, so not that easy. Do you have a lightweight flywheel manufacturer in mind?

I was thinking of an Exedy or one from the many suppliers of 1 piece billet steel ones based in the US. Had one fitted to my classic weighed about 5.5kg.

Mackers,

Bad news on the performance clutch front, according to my sources no-one in the UK does a performance clutch for that model Impreza, although there seem to be plenty available in the States, so I can't help you on that front either. However, as I said, we are interested, in cryo-treating a full clutch and flywheel assembly for road use and getting feedback, so if you do buy the full kit, and are interested in making it 2-3 times as strong and making it last longer, get in touch and we will see what kind of a deal we can cut.
Alan
