I have heard that the MY99 has the spaces for door tweeters, but none actually fitted. Does anyone know if the wirng is actually present in the door and how one might go about fitting a pair? Do you have to take the whole door trim off? (Oh for a Haynes manual!)

PS Anyone got any suggestions as to Which tweeters to fit and from where?

Cheers,

Bernie M

Hi, no wiring I'm afraid however most replacement component speakers have the tweeters wired from the bass unit either direct or via a separate crossover in which case you can simply run the wire within the door.

I fitted Alpine 6 1/4" drive units using MDF spacers I made, and run tweeters off a passive crossover installed inside the bottom of each door. The tweeters are mounted using the supplied mounting kit and a small piece of MDF just behind the door grills. You'll have to take the door trim off which is dead easy, just be carefull with the trim clips they look like they might break easy.

Other thing to watch is that you don't foul the window when it's down.

It's well worth the effort and from the outside you wouldn't know that they're fitted.

True, no wiring is present.

the tweeters are the least of your worries. As Phil has pointed out it is the depth of the speaker which is all important.

My 6.5" CD-technologies have 4ml clearance behind to the glass and push out the door panels slightly. Snug is an understatement !

It's well worth replacing the existing speakers - they are extremely crap. Adding a tweeter to the existing speakers is an expensive and futile exercise. The sound will merely be made crap at a higher pitch.

I fitted Kenwood 130mm components in the front. They replace the existing units without any modifications. I glued the tweeters onto the door frames behind the existing holes.

Most modern head units will drive these sized speakers well. Larger speakers, if you can get them to fit, will give deeper base.

Bear in mind that the rear speaker are also extremely crap. If you replace only the front speakers, then the distortion from the rears will still make the system sound crap. You need to replace these as well. 100mm coaxial speakers fit perfectly.

I got all my speakers for about £100 from Halfords.

The FAQ section tells you how to get the door frames off.
