As already said, you don't need door builds, just an MDF spacer. I used 12mm mdf to get the depth and had to cut the plastic mounts a bit, but they'll fit.
My JBL GT6.0c MkII 6.5" fronts fit in the std mounts, I dont think they touch the windows (well the window goes up and down without any bangs or scrapes!)
Will these 12mm MDF spacers improve sound / reduce rattles ???
I know I had to put an MDF spacer on the back of one of my impreza's to get some 6x9's in cleanly.
You may (?) get some benefits from the mount due to isolating the driver unit from the door better, but it would be fairly questionable IMHO. As long as you mount the unit strongly on the pod, and the pod's securely mounted, you won't see any difference.
Anyone with practical experience of both care to concur or dispute?
I have not tried MDF spacers, but Rockin'Ru sent me speaker baffles which very nicely padded between the speaker and the factory spacer (6.5" Infinity BTW - no mounting depth probs at all - but if you're going for posher, deeper stuff >72mm you may struggle - mine are only 59.5mm MOUNTING depth) and killed a lot of vibrations that were there before (even with 4.5sqm/door of sound-deadening). But the baffles are NOT sealed all over behind the driver as it sounds better infinite baffle. Still worth doing though to calm the vibes and gives excellent weather protection (having hacked off a lot of the splash guard from the factory spacer to get the new speakers in - if you just leave it, the magnet area of your speakers may well start to rust (some Kenwoods I had in temporarily - only a month or two had a few marks near the magnet which scrubbed off, but give it longer and they would surely have suffered), but a pain to not be able to find anywhere in the UK to supply them. Rockin' was most helpful though and ordered them from Crutchfield for me (they don't deliver internationally) and mailed them over.

I managed to get 17cm Pioneer speakers in the front using plastic spacers bought from the local ICE centre. They clear the window at the back with room to spare and the door trim fits without problem. Inexpensive too from what I remember. I had to drill one hole in the door frame per spacer though to screw it down properly.
Just fitted a pair of Infinity 652i 's.
Not too expensive at £65 and slotted straight into the door. All I needed to do was trim the plastic pod about 1/2 inch to clear the back of the speaker.
