I've seen a guage pod that replaces the small glove box above the stereo - see link on GGR's site below. I am after a blank faced pod that I can cut/drill myself.

try scoobymania, they do one for £80 + vat. I don't know if it comes with out holes though...

It is 10cm wide and displays two rows of 20 characters.

I need to interface to my ECU using the OBD-II connector that you find by your right knee below the steering wheel on the underslope of the footwell.

It will display boost, ignition retard, coolant temp, air temp, lambda data etc. I.e. whatever I can extract from the ECU.

If I get my code right, it'll also tell you when to change gear, plus time your 0-60s and in gear acceleration, but that's an awful lots of programming that I haven't even thought about yet !

Don't worry - I'll publish all the details on my site once I get it working, but it's going to be a few weeks yet.

I had thoughts about doing something like this, somewhat akin to what the ol' Nissan Skyline has, but being a bit of a techno retard wouldn't have a clue where to start!

I can program, no problem there...it's my job. It's just getting all the info from the ECU, knowing what info you <I>can</I> get from it and then writing the code to an EEPROM or something (I'm only used to writing executable system programs).

How are you at Delphi or 8051 microcontroller assembler ?

I am going to prototype everything in Delphi on my laptop, and then port it to assembler. The Delphi classes will be released open source, once I'm not to embarrassed about the quality of my code :-)

I'm in two minds as to whether to get the ScoobyMania pod or the Subaru one. I need to machine a very neat hole in the front panel, and it's going to be rather tricky if the front panel is not removable - the Subaru version is removable, whilst the ScoobyMania one is not.

Does anyone know _how_much_ dash hacking is necessary in order to fit the Subaru one ? Is it straightforward, or a bit dicey ?

You guys will have fun with this.

The signal that comes from the OBD-II connector is not directly compatible with serial (U-ART) interface on a PC/Laptop.

There are some conversion cables you can get but its not as straightforward as you may think.

I have some software that takes very general readings from any car with an ODB-II compliant connector.

I also have the structures for the data that comes back over the wire and the calculations required to convert them into real data.
