In one pic the snow was coming down so guess he did not see it due to the heavy snow fall and may have been dark as well.
Not sure how having or not having 4WD/ grip no grip would makes any odds

A few years back a very similar thing happened to a mate of mine when he was delivering to a building site! He got struck by the gate as it came through the window and it damaged his shoulder.
He got a nice pay out after a few weeks in hospital because the gate hadn't been properly secured!
