Hey Wu Tang, what about the suitcase and various other items around my apartment?
Thanks for the mag offer ...right now I'm not sure if I'll be able to meet up with KFC or not, and I woludn't want him to have to carry it all around, so I guess I'll pass. Unless you're willing to send it to me along with some other stuff I can't get in Japan, like, say, Chinese sausages (just kidding about that -- it'll never make it through customs)...
So, is anyone else interested in working on the Google Android Challenge? :-)
Oh and by the way, does anyone have an *American* ING Direct account? I'm going to sign up, and if you send me a referral email you get a bonus...
Sunny - looks like the rest of my work week will be late ones. I won't be back in the city and done dinner until like 9:30pm. the alternative is You can leave it at the hotel if you're around the area and I'll just get it from the front desk.

I'd be interested in the Google Android Challenge.
Speaking of interest, are ING's rates competative in the US? Here in Canada ING pays 3.75% and even the big banks (HSBC - 4.25%, Royal Bank - 4%) have better rates on savings accounts, not to mention other players like President's Choice Financial - 4.1% and Canadian Tire Financial Services - 4.1%.
Just whatever you do, steer clear of ICICI. High interest rates are pointless if you can't get at your money when it's time to pay your credit card bill. "Sorry, I can't do that for you right now because the system is down for maintenace, please call back tomorrow... Is there anything else I can help you with?"
KGB - find out how much it would cost for your wheel to be repaired.
LaterZ!
Darren!!
The reason I didn't bother was that the wheel was cracked wide open where you can put your hand through it, and this is not a cast wheel - it's not forged either, it's semi-solid forged. I don't feel like being humiliated at the wheel repair place yet... hence my focus has always been to look for a replacement somewhere
KY: The guy lives in Upland and works at Pasadena - Joe would probably know how long a drive that would be. Road trip sounds fun but it looks to be a week to and back

Well hopefully the guy that has 2 who can ship professionally can come through for you.

I was thinking maybe like a walkie-talkie application. Select your friends in the list, press-and-hold a button, say something, release, and have that voice message delivered to them.
You mean like "Mike" from Telus? My phone already has PTT (push to talk) but I'm told it's a PITA to setup and your provider needs to support it. (FIDO for one does not, which is why they don't have the option in their firmware.)
Now if you could do it using peer-to-peer communication and thus avoid provider charges (assuming you are in bluetooth or wifi range of eachother perhaps?) it could potentially be cool for those situations where you're trying to find your friends/family in the mall or something. Range is probably too limited for the true peer-to-peer communication though.
I'm guessing it would be pricey to avoid the need for carrier support by doing it over GMRS, at least for now with the insane data rates we get charged in Canada.
How does the TPMS work? How often does it update? I wonder how effective it is to use this at autox where you know right away how much the reading went up by.

There's a little transmitter unit that replaces the tire valve. It's a little box that lives inside the tire which senses the tire pressure and temperature. It sends radio signals to the receiving unit in the car, which displays the tire pressure and tire temp.
It works via radio frequencies. Each sending unit has its own frequency. We'll see what happens when I drive the car away from the house!
I'd better put the TPMS units in my car otherwise I'll drive to work on Monday, have the studnuts take the tireds off of teh car, and have no TPMS to install!
I have a few ideas, but I don't think any of them are million dollar ideas. My strong point is design (technical, not UI) and implementation.
Yah? Cool, because my strong point is in the hand-waving that goes with the UI design and marketing, but I'm kinda sucky in the technical design department. Sounds like a good combo.
So I had this crazy idea ... wait, here it comes .. you know when you're computing financial transactions, and you get those little half-cent rounding errors? ... oh wait, wrong idea
Darren, push-to-talk is so 2006. Although the asynchronous voicemail / IM-style method hasn't yet been tried, as far as I know. Any new ideas in that department?
I'm looking for someone who's into text processing to work on a scheduling app, actually. The kind of person who knows how to write a Bayesian spam filter. And also someone who is willing to study the Android architecture and figure out how to hook into the text messaging application...
Anyway, if you guys are interested, have a look at the SDK and let me know what you think?

Thanks for the savings account advice, BTW, thugster -- that's good to know as I was under the impression ING was still pretty much the best deal going. In any case it's way better than the 0.05% interest (no kidding) I get in Japan. On the other hand, a home loan here can be had for 2.8% (!!!!!!)

KGB: Upland and Pasadena? Pretty much the same place. Find a lowered Honda with some Asian thugs in it and follow it, that will take you to Monterey Park and Alhambra, then just go north from there.

Looks like the API documents the "OS level" for the moment and I can't even find how to register for a notification when a new SMS arrives. Strange thing is the documentation mentions there's a description in some other section, but when you go there, there's nothing.
Maybe they'll improve the documentation at a later date as well as document the default SMS application they will ship with the OS.
As for writing a Bayesian spam filter, I know nothing about how to write one, but it looks like it may be possible to find one written in java with a license that would allow us to use it.
Sunny - thanks for dropping off the magazines. The article looks good and it looks like you handled the canon well. The intro photo looks really good! I won't be back in Vancouver until 7-Dec, so I'll just drop them off at Darren's after that.
Joe - Looks like I'll be landing this Saturday. Errands and some looking around will make the time go by fast so I doubt I'll be venturing outside of the city.
Thanks for the compliment. I think the pictures weren't so bad, but I wish the printing quality is better. The other guy who shared the car w/ me had the same camera, similar shots and their's was way closer to what the pictures look on colour corrected monitor.
I need some serious work w/ the long lenses though. Most of mine ended up being slightly blurred, and I'm also not so good at composing pics w/ them. My interior shots also need massive work. The ones on the magazines look on par, but it really could be better. I also missed a lot of details like smoothing over the alcantara, taking wheel shots before going onto dirt, not taking a full on side picture of our car, and no moving shots of the back. As far as I know though, the boss was fairly pleased with my pictures so I should be on for future trips.
A side note on the main picture. I was really worried that I was gonna drop an 80k Cayenne into the drink (like-wise w/ the big ass shot on the second page, as there's a cliff in front of the car and it's pointing downhill), but as it turned out there's a hill holder, which made me think that I had mad clutch skillz for a second. If we had more time I probably would've actually stuck the car into the boat ramp so I can get more shots close to the water and avoid the boat clutter in the back.
As for the ST vs WRX test after that, I was driving the ST in both moving pictures, and got a bit of flak from the photographer for making the car too flat through the corners lol. Smooth driving doesn't always equal to good action shots.

I've been to Monterey Park, just had no idea how far down south I was from Vancouver. I like that direction as long as I don't get shot at...

Ya know what would make a tonne of money? On-the-fly translation! Choose your language, speak into the phone, and have it come out the other end in another language!
Hmm, kind of a Star Trekkian universal translator thingey eh?
