I was dragged round the electrical store in search of a new washing machine as the old Slovenian manufactured Gorenje is about to throw a bearing (sounds like a high speed train ) and I can't source replacement parts:
Amongst a huge line up, we were faced with several brands that appealed to us:
Bosch
Siemens
Balay (who? Spanish brand)
about €30-50 between each model of the same spec.
Guess what? All three machines were actually the very same machine, barring the badge and visual controls: same drum, same door, same drawer, same pump acess cover. And no doubt the same motor and electronics underneath. Yet one carries a €50 excess due to its badge (Bosch, incase you didn't guess ).

Yes, but a Meile is on par with a BMW M5
Top of the range Bosch would be BMW M3
Bottom of the range Bosch is a 318
Just it happens that the 318 also shares the same engine, suspension and chassis with a much cheaper Ford Focus, meaning one is just paying for the premium brand badge.
(Theoretical example, before anyone starts. Maybe using VAG's platform sharing would have been a better example ).
not quite, imo, Miele is akin to what Merc were in the 80's and 90's built by engineers not by accountants
the basic Miele model is like buying the old Merc 190 (beloved of Taxi driver's throughout Africa)
because the 190 was designed and built by the same people who built the S Class mercs of the day --- it got the same paint process the same antirust and the same engineering integrity
and thats why its still used as a workhourse throughout the developing world (190 that is not a miele washing machine)
I bought a Honda Civic ESi as my 2nd car, it was the model under the "top spec" UK VTi model. I much prefered it to be honest, it had 30bhp less but the SOHC D-Series VTEC engine weighed substantially less than the DOHC B-Series VTEC engine and VTEC engaged at 4k rather than the VTi's 5.5k, it used to poop on my friends VTi . If I could afford two cars, i'd definitely have another, in 139k only the original radiator broke.
I currently drive a MG ZT 120, bought it 2 1/2 years ago so MG Rover was gone before I even bought it, it's the smallest engine but I like driving it, it's never let me down (touch wood) and at the time I needed an economical car as I was buying my first house.
Pretty much bottom of the range as ZT's go but I still love the look of it.
My dad has the 190 and my uncle the 260, way way better than the naysayers would have people beleive, certainly better built than my Saab, actually a pretty good looking car as well, much nicer than the tweedy 75 but trouble is everyone is convinced they are sh1t yet will put up with anything regardless of how good it actually is if its german. Serious bargains for those not to bothered about what Audi and BMW owners think.

We bought a Miele as I wanted the doom and gloom from the missus when the washer broke down again, £700 plus quid and a ten year waranty, so £70 a year for me not to have to think about it, she will just ring them and their man will arrive to sort it out, have to say it sounds well made compared to the last ones, it doesnt shake or eat socks. Bought a Sebo vacuum that has been good, I think buying quality stuff saves you time and money in the long run.
