Hi All
Any poker players on here?
Been playing for about 6 years now online and 'live'. Im doing ok and overall I am up, but now am playing much better and have discovered a good cash game that is live in one of the local casinos in which i have walked away with 300 in two sittings this week (only played twice there so far)
Anyone else moved from tournament play to cash? I just feel that tourney play is ruined by the same crowd that play week in week out and actually give plenty of signals to each other and are working as a 10-20 strong team if truth be known!

Has anyone on here made any decent winnings from poker?

I got chatting to a guy who was made redundant from his well paid job and has been doing a bit of part time dj work and poker 4 nights a week and has been making just as much, which sounds very nice. I don't think the wife would be worth living with if i played poker more than once a week to be fair! even if i was bringing in a hundred every time

I play Cash Poker occasionally once a month or so. Its a good laugh and I don't take it too seriously, but you can do well at it and a friend of mine is a dealer in a poker house and plays online and live cash games as his main source of income.

He is doing rather well for himself.

I quite my job about 2.5 years ago to play poker for a living. I've been fine ever since, but it's not always been a rosy. It's a very difficult path to take with lots of stress and heartache. That said, I've worked less than most people on the forum in that time

This last year I've played very little as I've been quite invovled in some other projects. Looking to start playing some high volume again soon.

I will only be playing once to twice a week as I work full time in retail and have commitments outside of work also.
The game I have been playing is 50p-£1 blinds NL Holdem and that has been my main game although I have dabbled in other forms of poker over the last 5 years or so.
It is amazing that the standard of play is actually quite low and people will pay you off with the best hand.
I know if i put the volume in say 4-5 nights a week I could easily see between 100-250 a night which can start to add up to monthly wages in a fortnight lol.
As you say poker isn't always rosy and can go through some downward swings also when you keep getting out drawn by lesser hands.
There were 3 guys at the table who reloaded 2-3 times with £100 but I just didn't pick up anything to play against them with which is a shame but it will happen. Most of my winnings in the last two sittings has actually come from big pocket pairs which makes a nice change!

The edges in poker are small and the variance is huge - that's why it can be so frustrating.

While higher live play win rates can be achieved, it is generally regarded that winning 5 big-blinds per 100 hands played is excellent. That means if you play NL$1/2 and win 5bb/100 you make $10 for every hundred hands you are dealt. In an average online game you might get through 65 hands per hour playing a single table at a time. In other words, you need to play two tables an hour at an excellent win-rate just to win around $12/hr.

In addition, NL$1/2 is a relatively competent level in terms of opponents and, to play it seriously, you'd want a bankroll of $6000 or more. A lot more if you want a low risk of ruin.

All I ever say to people when asked about poker is to realise how absurdly sick the game can be, how small the edges are, and how, in the long run, win-rates are relatively small.

To make the big bucks you need either massive volume or to play big levels. Right now I can get through 1400-1500 hands pre hour which can yeild a good hourly rate if I win at a decent clip.

FWIW, most players find that all (or more) of their winnings actually comes from one hand alone....AA. The current database I have shows $46,264 in winnings. Over that sample I have made $66,176 from AA. So technically, all of your play is about disgusing when you have bullets meaning you can get paid

I am off again tonight I played Thursday night and doubled my money and my money did actually come from KK followed by AA. Some sick chump called a raise pre flop on the flop and turn with 6 high and hit a 6 against my AK although I was ready to give up on the river, which cut my winnings down for the night to £70 from about £100but you learn, however my instincts where right that he had nothing as he'd been floating all night!
I went card dead from there on when getting creative I kept missing the board so called it a night while I was up.
I think even at 50/£1 you can make enough money to live if you managed your bankroll correctly the potential to win over a £100 a night is there at the casino I play but it is having the time, patience and inclination.
