Last summer my neighbour out in croatia had her sister come over from OZ for the first time in 25 years, while we were sat talking the neighbours maingey mutt came over on the scrounge as usual, and she commented on how supprised she was to see that it was still alive, as it was a young pup when she left all those years ago, it has subsiquently passed away at the ripe old age of 27 according to my neighbour.
Now i had no idea a dog could live this long, and the oldest i know of was around 16, so just wondered whats the record as surely this must be close to it.
Does depend on the breed and it does seem that those that have been tampered with by the Kennel Club etc. the least seem to live the longest e.g. collies typically reach 15-16 years old.

Well then it seems it is possible, these two old dears have no reason to lie so i'm inclined to believe them now that the record seems to be longer, and the theory of the dog not being tampered with holds water.
This dog had what i thought was the worst case of mainge (sp) i have ever seen, but was obviously due to old age.
It was a heinz 57 and conceived in the mountains and lived it's whole life here, so that may be the reason it lived so long, it was also small and i believe small dogs tend to live longer.
