All I want is a red kettle and toaster to surprise my girlfriend with as she wants a toaster............cannot believe I actually don't have one but it just goes to show how much time I spend in the kitchen!
My criteria is simple, red and less than £60 for both. Its for heating water and burning toast, there is no need to spend any more than this in my opinion but it would seem my opinion is seriously wrong! Unless I buy a Kettle for £80 and a toaster for similar money according to the reviews on Amazon, my tea will taste of plastic, my face will melt, my knuckles will get burnt and my apartment will explode!
I'm not reading another review ever again. If I like the look of it, I'm just going to buy it.

Can be handy for things which you don't have massive knowledge of, but for stuff like toasters, just buy the one you like the look of. I'm trying to find suitable replacements for MR16 halogens and that's a minefield. I'd have been caught out if reviews weren't available. Similarly, looking at low energy floodlights too and most of those are crap.

Reviews are okay, but sometimes you have to just go with your instinct.
1. I bought a mattress recently and read x,y and z reviews etc, etc. In the end i just bought the one i thought was comfortable and ignored "most" of the advice. I did heed the advice to buy from an independant manufacturer though.
2. I also bought a tefal actifry a while ago. Some people slate it, but reading the Amazon reviews, around 10% reported it breaking down. Based on that i took out a 3yr warrenty, and hey presto mine developed a fault.
As Macheivelli said the wisdom of a leader is in knowing which advice to take, and which to ignore.
I bought some skull candy earphones a couple of weeks ago against a number of reviews, wish I had listened now as I agree with the reviews, they don't fit properly, sound quality is average and a t £30 they cost 3 times more than my old Sony ones which I prefer, ah well.
Oh and after reading many (millions) of reviews I still haven't bought a projector as I'm scared of the rainbow effect that seems to occur with DLP projectors. Damn these reviews!

could be worse you could be looking for a TV and looked on AVforums to help make you mind up.
If you want a toaster, you can not go wrong with a dualit! we have cheap toasters and kettles at work and we have to get a new one every 6 months , so either go cheap and throw them away every year or buy a dualit and keep it forever...
I rarely bother now. You've only got to look at threads on here with people all giving conflicting advice....
Don't get me started on TripAdvisor reviews - especially the ones where it's obviously the business owner writing themselves glowing reports (having said that was funny when I started reading a review of a restaurant and recognised an NSR regular as the writer)

Are you sure you didn't mishear her and what she actually asked for is a spit roaster?
Our kettle came from ASDA or Tesco (can't remember which). £4.98 about 4 years ago for a 3KW jobbie. Still our main kettle and still works fine. Not red though ....

PS: oh, and I didn't bother with "reviews"......

I have the same problem with trying to find a phone charger on Amazon....seems of 150 odd reviews about 70 people will say it'll blow up, catch fire, fry the phone, or fall apart.
Anyhoo: Is there such thing as a toaster that fits a FULL size slice of UK bread and toasts it properly?
Seems everything these days is either designed to toast foriegn Bimbo bread (so the top 2 inches of a UK slice doesn't get toasted) or doesn't toast properly (dodgy timer, does one side more than the other etc). With probably the only excepton being the top end Dualit (not the cheaper one). Owch...pricey.
Got a Philips kettle...all stainless 3kw fast boil, £20 from Tesco (this one: http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.206-3727.aspx_), nice kettle, but sadly some feejit broke the hinge on the lid by wrenching it right back off the hinge

You might have some luck with reductions...
Amazon can list the same item but different colours - maybe different part numbers - as separate items.
I once got a Kenwood k-mix mini-blender thing for £68 rather than £90-£100 because there was a bad review on the black one. Obviously I checked the other reviews and elsewhere too...
All depends on the price really. I always wanted one of those dualit toasters for about £100 and even had vouchers to cover the cost but glad I read up on them as very bad reviews. Then a friend had one as a gift from parents and said its crap too - he only brings it out when the parents stay so not to offend them lol.
Kettles I would read up on as some are super noisy, dont boil that fast and cant pour for ****. Simple things but for something you use day in day out makes sense to do your homework. Plus Im always a sucker for that glass ones that glow blue etc when boiling
