Times are changing but IMO ford with the rs have managed to make a great car that sounds good and falls inline with eco standards with a 5 cylinder. If they where to give it 4x4 then I would be looking to sell my child to get one. I just think that all German cars are so soul less and i can't find a good neesh to separate them from one another there all to serious IMO.

The new Focus RS is also a turbo'd 4-pot. The Volvo 5pot is going the same way as the VR6 (the VR6 was last seen in the Porsche Cayenne 3.6FSi...not bad for a engine that started life in a Golf! )
Being fuel efficient is one thing. But when paying £40+K for a performance car, is efficiency a priority? It shouldn't be. If it is, either you have car you can't afford, or you aren't a true petrolhead. I mean the fuel/tax band savings will be offset by the higher purcahse price and increasing insurance costs!
I can imagine a survey of any average Joe in the street would reveal they'd want a top-of-the-range version of the car they like. But they are put off as they don't like the fuel consumption. Ergo they don't care how it sounds, or drives, just as long as its faster, looks good and doesn't hurt the wallet.
Its like people who buy Range Rover TDv8s and complain about the fuel consumption and high tax band....well what did they expect, its 2tons of land barge? If they want economy buy something slower and lighter (which is usually cheaper to buy too).
Sorry, I just think I'm on the wrong planet these days, anyone care to point me in the direction of a world with more common sense please?

I could not give a toss about MPG over performance but do welcome better MPG. You just have to look at some of the new cars that are coming about. The performance car would seem to be getting lighter with less heavy interior ie elec seats smaller engines and big turbos. Its all driven buy eco **** but the end result is car manufacturers are being inadvertently pushed in our direction. Maybe there is a chance of us getting the recipe of the 2.0 Subaru back but not sure what the future holds for 4x4 ie weight/rolling resistance.

My ancient diesel Golf has more charisma, sorry engine noise....
With 300+ ft.lb of torque at "idle" I'd 'ave it out of the twisties ?
Really who needs such a piece of jewellery ?
