Saw one of these twin turbo beasts in the company car park recently on an H plate. I thought it looked pretty cool, seen alot of FTO's but this is the first GTO I seen. Anyone know much about the spec of these ?

3liter mid engine twin turbo, 280 bhp, 4wd. Big heavy tank. don't handle great and are a bit sluggish for that amount of power. Would probably (maybe) keep the pace with a uk scoob on the twisties but are quicker on the straights.

Can pick one up for about 5 grand. Huge servicing costs. Loaded with ever toy you can imagine, 4 wheel steer, electric everything. Even a small switch to make the exhaust loud or quiet. Wierd driving position.

And i'm spent!

Bit of a liability I have heard, they seem to like destroying the 4wd gubbins but I suppose that figures, nearly two tonees, powerful and four big tyres being driven, something has to give and when it does its about 2 grand !

One of these had a go when I was in my old Volvo 850 T5, it was marginally quicker but only slightly.

They always remind me of a big Technical Lego kit, i.e. impressive to 12 year old boys on all the normal criteria but the rest of the world would rather have a Supra or 300 ZX.

They handle great!!!

The problem is you have no feeling as the car does all the work for you. This is often confused by people who have never owned one as being poor handling. It is not. It's great, you could drive around a scooby no probs.

From what ive heard form an ex owner, very fast an handle good, just no feeling as mentioned.

Car does all the work :( Why he sold it and got a Chimera, now hes on a 911, only while he waits for his new GT3 :(

as far as im aware they are slower both 0-60 and top end than a uk turbo.

These are not 280 bhp but 320bhp, 0-60 is around 4.8 seconds and top speed is in excess of 160mph, no standard uk turbo impreza does that.

Sorry to disagree with some of you... but a standard GTO would leave a standard UK scoob for dead in terms of acceleration or top end.

Handling wise, the 3000 has more grip and is every bit as capable as the scoob.... just a lot heavier and with less driver involvement.

Reliability has never been a problem for GTO's but the running costs are steep.

I had one for 6 months , 0-60 nearer 6 seconds , top end over 160 ,
not a great car , replaced it with a 300zx tt , much nicer IMO.
Felt like Nightrider in it , which is not a bad thing I guess.
Still , in 3 days I'll have my first Scooby!

Gonna say, the one I had a go at couldnt pull away from my T5, no way it was a sub 5 sec to sixty car.

There is a non turbo version of the 3000gt, it was probably that you were racing, or maybe the guy wasnt even trying to race you, a gto vr4 is on par with the supra twin turbo.

Are you sure? I can see the top end being right but the BHP and 0-60 times look suspicious.

Thats on par with an Evo and I have destroyed many a GTO. :)

been in one over the weekend.

very nice spec but watch out for extremely expensive parts if something goes wrong, all those elec wizardry... warranty claims my mate in 2 months of ownership is probably enough to get 94 wrx!

power is good but due to obesity, not a nippy as scoob or the likes. should be quicker than most cars in top speed, had a run of to limiter with a e46 m3 *cough, not saying how fast, cough* showing on speedo so guess its ok for top end.

I owned a Twin Turbo Import Manual , as mentioned earlier , nice cruising car , but 0-60 around 6 seconds ,poss just under.
I traded it in for a Nissan 300zx , similar spec.
IMO the Nissan a nicer faster car. The GTO is the only car in the class that is heavier than the Nissan , and it shows.
Still like to see the GTO's though. In that class you have the RX7 and Supra TT , IMo , Supra first , 300zx second , RX7 third , with Nightrider last. I've driven examples of all 4. I believe the GTO also to be the most expensive when they go wrong.
Not really comparable to EVO,Scoobies ie 4 door saloons , but all nice cars in their own way.

ok firstly there is a NON Turbo Version of this car that looks identical , Secondly there is a AUTO version

I know because my stupid ASS just went and bought one

You look at this thing and you think my god this thing must ****ing go like Stink with its 3 liter V6 quad cam engine these Four huge 3inch bore exhausts

You think to yourself SO what if its an automatic its going to Tramp like an alcoholc to a free bar, And you stupidly part with 3 grand for this pristine minter example with only 60k on the clock

Now then heres what happens next......

You go to the garage and you spend the best part of a 100 pounds filling it up and you head for the nearest open road, you find a nice un Gatso;d dual carrage way and floor it ....

Now then the next part is really quite unpleasnt, You wait and you wait and you keep expecting something to happpen any minute your foot is on the floor and your watching in horror as your Fuel Tank proceeds to empty itself
You look over your sholder as a the X reg Golf gti over takes you with eas followed by the mr2 and then a B reg rusty Xr2i

The next thing you do is put a For Sale sign in the window..........

Biggest disapointment of my life , I scraped my Mazda 323 Gt expecting this beast to blast it into oblivion and i could of Cried my 323 GT with its 150,000 miles on the clock and mear 180bhp 1840 cc 16v would of appolutly had this thing for ****ing breakfast no trouble at all , and done it for a fraction of the petrol, What Really Seriously pisses me off the most is that the dam insrance company want near double the money to insure this thing even my dam BAnger Visa GTI 1600 would of Nailed this thing

I feel totaly cheated and robbed this thing is clearly some evil japanese car designers idea of a SIck twisted joke

And yes im totaly serious If anyone wants a Pritine minter GTO non turbo email me
mimic58@hotmail.com il even let it for 200 quid less than i paid for it last week tax & mot and a half tank of gas 2,800

Tim Harvey, Richard Burns and Jeremy Clarkson would disagree when they rated bottom in a handling test.

Good for them.

I've owned one and found it had fine handling for the driving I did.

I like the fact you quote me 5 years on, snappy.

Less driver involvement than a scoob?

Is that possible? It must drive itself then lol

Insigma

Bollocks.... The scoob would have it on acceleration no problem at all and i dont think it would out corner one either Ok its 4 wheel stear but its also dam near twice as heavy

The only thing the GTO really wins hands down is looks they really are awsum lookers

fatscoobfella1
08 June 2008, 23:32
A scoob might be able to have YOURS on acceleration, but you have bought one off the bottom of the pile..

Your GTO is comparable to a 1600 cc auto impreza in the scoob world.

It sucks mate i am totaly devistated, Ok yeh non turbo auto is the slowest of them all but even still....

I think you would have to do something pritty seriouse to the manual version to get it to keep up with a Decent Wrx

Not to mention the fact the petrol bill for these things is just insane

No worries.

I prefered my 300zx to the GTO anyway :)
