Thumbs up What performance car that no one would want to steal can you get?

Hello all... maybe a silly question. My friend has an Honda Civic R-type well he just got it back after it was stolen at gunpoint the other day!!! Now I would love an Impreza or Evo one day but I couldn't live with the thought of my car getting hijacked with my wife and son in the car or getting attacked or even killed for the car.

So which high performance car could I get that would be subtle or unattractive enough to get and be safe in?

I was thinking of along the lines of a Audi RS4, M5 or Octavia Estate 1.8T 4X4 (Apparently you can tune them quite well and I loved the practicality of my Legcay Estate so and estate would be nice). Any ideas?

Don't see how you can win this one to be honest. You have the remember that these criminals know their cars too so even if you go for a 200bhp skoda they know that its fast and wouldn't draw attention to itself for bank jobs.

Never felt threatened in my Fiat Coupe Turbo, even driving into Manchester every day, no way would I do the same in an Evo, part of the reason why I didnt buy a Scoob in the end even though it would have been a better car than the Fiat.

There'a a Transit van for sale with a 380 bhp Cosworth engine - guys only after £2k. Saw it on Passionford I think - it looks so bog standard (incl hub caps....) that no-one would give it a second glance.

Said you wanted plenty room

Very difficult as SB says. If you truly want a stealth car, you have to make the outside AND interior look like the base model - so take off the spoilers, the nice alloys, the leather bucket seats, and put the 1.6 GL D badge on the back. The right non-pea-shooter exhaust and wide wheels should hopefully just make people laugh at you as a wannabe, rather than realise something is truly suspicious. Only something like the rev counter will give the game away.

Frankly, I think everyone knows what an RS4 and M5 are, you're asking for trouble there!

If you know of a Dobermann breeder that teaches them to catch bullets, let us know

You can't win on this one ... wrong place wrong time scenario even in a relatively quiet backwater:

Work colleague had knife held to throat 7 a.m. one morning with car keys demand.... his aged escort worth all of 50 quid!

Neighbour's son had his very tidy old MG 1600 Maestro Car-jacked whilst waiting at a red lights in broad sunny daylight in the middle of town. Both cars used later for a number of crimes by out of town big city crims.

So the answer is - spend that 25k on moving to a safer area.

Hmm a big *** black sporty Merc AMG with tinted windows all round. With luck they will think you are some kind of gangster yourself and leave well enough alone.

As a lot of these performance cars seem to have a) enough room for 4 people (for a job), b) relatively easy to get in and out of and c) luggage space......

Get something like a Lotus Elise / Vaux VX220. Impractical, can't get in and out easily, no luggage space but still hellish fun. OK, if a thief is stealing it to joy-ride then you won't stop that, but they don't really seem to go for two-seaters.

Even better, get a single seater

maybe as they are seen as too dated. the interior is awful (it even makes the jap rubbish look good).

or maybe it's just too slow for a getaway car?

Thanks for all the replies guys truly informative and entertaining. I always get a good load of replies from you guys.

Anyone else...

The Legacy was well stealthy but was also getting on and Insurance was too high. the value of the car and running costs just did not add up. The guy who bought it off me now does not use SUL or Optimax. Leathers it from the moment he starts it and turns the engine off from the moment he gets out of it. He won't service it properly either...I'll never sell him a performance car again...its depressing.

Charade GTti, or is that too small?

No f*cker knows what they are and I've never heard of one being nicked.

Easy enough to tune, mines running a bar boost on a hybrid turbo using a Daihatsu Racing Service ECU(soon to be a Wolf 3d V4 and 1.5 bar boost ), LSD, sorted suspension, upgraded brakes, full turbo to tail exhaust, and an induction kit.

She fly's! 60 comes up in 6.6 and I covered the quarter in 15.3(with ****e tyres), not bad when you consider its only 993cc!

What is our beloved country coming to? Having to choose our cars based on wether it is a high risk theft or car jacking vehicle...I guess this is why we all pay massive insurance premiums.

Anyway, how about a Saab 9000 Aero. 225bhp and enough torque to tow our country somewhere warm!
Massive amounts of space and very tunable.

Very plain the interior of the 944, plain simple and elegant. If you've ever been in one you'd know the quality is also top notch. Better in fact than most modern cars.
My only issue with the 944/968 is their exterior styling. Anyone who thinks the 944Turbo is slow needs their head examining.
