Kudos for BMW having the balls to make this car. Light, powerful and faster than any unsuspecting member of the public would imagine. Awesome car and I would like one very much so. Could be a tad nicer to the eye though.
BMW weight figures are all more than the true figure as they weigh with full fluids, 3 pasengers, boot full of luguage etc so it will be less than their delclared weight.
I find that unlikely to be honest - many manufacturers now use the Euro standard for kerb weights which is something like a full tank, driver and some luggage. I forget the exact figures, but it's something like that.

Yep, spot on mate. Give or take a few bits here is the difference:
Audi (plus a few others) measure unladen: just the car, but not in a driveable form
BMW measure curb weight (c.75-100kgs more than unladen): Fluids + 90% full of fuel
The standard measure is EU1 (75kgs more than curb): Curb + 68kg driver + 7kg cargo.
So my fully loaded old Saab 9k Aero is 1450kg kerb so I'll hopefully not be beaten by one in straight line....
It IS scary how much these new cars weigh though.
haha that's funny! You'll be the first to know It's running sweetly these days so parting would be hard.
Maybe I should get one of these new fangled BMW thingys - still waiting for them to get a bit quicker before I blow the 32k I have lying in the kitchen drawer for such events.
Its going to be lardy...rather than bicker about how BMW measure curb weight compared to other manufacturers, why not just compare the same engined cars in the current line up:
150kg between a 130 and a 530, thats the equivelent to two slender adult males....makes the 530 look light considering how much bigger it is.....Just apply the same logic to the 135 once the official weight is released....it will be heavier than a 130i anyway.
front starting to look ok with the posh enhanced pictures. The back is still a disaster in my eyes - looks like a little stumpy thing with cheepo lights.
And nudging the mid £30k's with a CD player and wind up windows
VXR8 will piss all over it with 4 seats, massive spec with money to spare!

They are trying to replicate the same design process as the old Compact. Build to a budget, say it will be Golf/Focus prices then massively overprice it
Far better specc'd cars for the same money with room, flair and no repmobile image. The 3 series was outselling the old Mondeo FFS, the new Dagenham Dave machine

Looks very tasty to me - I'm sure BMW will sort the handling on it too.
And a bugatti veyron, widely thought to be one of the fastest cars ever made and raved about in many places, weighs much more still. So what? That still doesn't make 1300-1400 kilos a "lightweight car", even for an Astra/Focus sized hatch. Caterhams, atoms and even Citreon AX's are really light, and something like a Clio 172 is just over a tonne, which I'd accept as being light. A classic impreza is a bit over 1200kg, which is light for what it is. On here Bugeyes etc are called "lardy" at 1380kg for a WRX, and yet in a Beemer somewhere between 1300-1400, or maybe over 1.5 tonnes is a "well done for having the balls to make it", lightweight car?
Not saying 13-1400 IS lightweight, it just seems to be accepted as the norm.
Not seen a single write up on a 3 series or Focus (or anything else pretty heavy) that mentions them being heavy - even though they are.
Seems weight is yet another "pick and choose" issue - some cars get labelled lardy, others seem to get away with it.
