They can rust.

If going for the 600, the biturbo model was introduced in 2002 IIRC.

Was sat behind a lower model CL on a T plate yesterday. Could not believe there was rust on the bootlid and rusty rear arches like some old fiesta. Seen plenty other Mercs of that era the same.

Really bad period for Merc build quality.

A friend has a CL600 that he's had from new. He's just had to spend £7000 getting an oil leak fixed......it's going in for warranty work (anti-perf) to have a WHOLE NEW BODY at Mercs expense due to rusting. He gets about 12-15mpg average. Deep pockets advised...

Well im back looking at these again.
Had a test drive yesterday in a cl 600 V12 twin turbo .Up for 21k .58k miles .
Looks fantastic to be fair IMO.I prefer this shape to the newer rounded shape out now .

Went back at lunch time today with the wife to have a look .It was ,nt there .When I asked ,they said they had found a small oil leak and had sent it in to be done .!!!!!

Anybody know what or where the leak mat be coming from ,because I will get it checked properly if I go ahead and buy it,to make sure it has been done properly. (is this leak a common problem ?).It would have a 3 year Rac warranty with it if I buy .

CL600 is truly fighting talk, maybe look at Gassing it up -- the boot looks like its the size of small south american country

i bet you could drive to the south of france in one sitting

btw I ws talking to someone in the trade re warranties as I had just bought a car privately and he said -- honestly, not worth the paper they are written, due in part to the ultimate get out clause "normal wear and tear", but if they are thowing it in hey ho

Well they are not giving the warranty for free ,I think he said it was about £1200 quid but its in the 21k price .

Just had a call to say its back in the showroom ,so it cant have been much .
Cant post pics up but its on Drive 4 Cars website if anyone wants to give an opinion on it .

Pic shows 19950 price but on Autotrader ,it is 20950 .He reckons the book price went up last month ,but would honour the lower price .

Have a look ,see what you think .

Don't do it.

Since i posted above, he's had to have all the Hydro suspension replaced second time in 2-3 years, as the suspension broke the body sunk down and the plastic wings cracked on the tops on the wheels so they need replacing too. It's still rusting on a daily basis, it still does 10mpg on a good day. You're looking at £10K a year maintenance at the least on average. The warranty will have a limit on it per repair that won't even touch the sides. You'd be mad to buy on of these and your wife will hate you every time you have to fork out another few K on repairs...

Ummmm .What to do ?

The wife has just had a look at it and she likes it .!!

The body work looks A1 to be fair .The suspension went up and down like it should .It does look awesome to be honest with the large chrome alloys (pimped I know ) .

Had a discussion about the warranty and it only covers 1K per claim which is next to useless on something like this .

But my heart says yes please and at the back of my head its saying "are you sure ".
The rouble is my philosophy has always been ,you only live once so give it a go .!!!!!!

Hes going to phone back later if he can get the warranty people to up the claim amount .(Nationwide Warranties I think )

At the end of the day its an almost 5 year old car and it will have odd bits on it that arnt perfect .
At the beginning of the week I was changing my wifes 6 year old car for a new C3 Picasso and now Im looking at this .!!!
I am usually quite decisive but this one is taking some Mulling over .

Are you stretching yourself? do you have £5k+ to throw at it in a worst case scenario?
The running costs will be extortionate, again can you afford to throw £1k+ at it for a service and a set of tyres?

Proceed with extreme caution, it's my opinion that with cars of this age, class and mileage that somebody has already had the best out of it and you'll be forever shelling out large wads of cash on it.

What are the other details? mileage/fmbsh/owners etc?

I'd rather chuck £20k into something virtually brand new and forget about any real expense for 3 years, but each to their own.

If you buy it can we have a sweep on how much it costs you in the first 12 months?

I'd be v suprised if it's less than £10K.

no worries mate, anytime

are the costs any more/less than a comparable 911? (It’s a genuine question I haven’t a clue)

FSH .58K Miles .3 or 4 owners i think he said .
I dont tear round at mach 2 everywhere ,and am fairly gentle warming cars up etc .Servicing my two previous Subarus ,RB5 and WR1 were not exactly cheap, although they had the under warranty peace of mind factor I must admit .
I was going to get something new for the wife ,but then thought 16k for a Citreon or something special for the same sort of cash .
I have been out of decent cars for the last three years or so and it has been hell to be honest .!!! Always hankering after a nice motor .It never leaves you ,if you are into cars .I thought I could fight it ,but its a losing battle .

Mate, my friend who has had his since new drives like Miss Daisy. Full MB history since new, he takes it back when the slightest thing goes wrong, it's been pampered like no other etc. I know it's hard to see things clearly when you REALLY want a car but you will be spending £10K plus a year to run it, don't be under any illusions otherwise...but if that doesn't bother you then fair play

Thanks for the comments fellas .Positive and negative .
I will have a think over the weekend and see which way to go .

All cars are a gamble I suppose ,and it can be luck of the draw as to whether its a good one or a bad one .

Nat ,how long has your mate had his for out of interest .And has he enjoyed the car or has it been a thorn in his side .?
I dont have the sort of cash to buy something like this from new so to get a car like this 5 year old is always going to be a bit /lot of a risk .There is something about the look of it that makes me want to own it .

He's had it since new (2002 i think). He's enjoyed it but he has the pockets to do so and isn't too bothered about the costs. He canceled his DB9 order a few months ago as he's spent do much on the CL600 that he just needed to keep it to make it worthwhile. How big are those wheels? His are 20's - £2k per tyre set, they scrub the fronts like mad with all the weight and the rears you'll be lucky to get 5/6k from. 10mpg average. That's £10K a year just on tyres and fuel if you do 12k miles. Plus £2k service if nothing is wrong, plus say about another £10K for repairs (NOTHING is cheap to replace) and you're looking at £22K plus insurance a year to run it... Brakes are another £2k all round, the suspension goes it another £10K odd, the panels that are plastic all crack, the double glazing mists and new units are a grand or so each....

surely these costs are based on MB dealers charging £120 to 180 per hour

how can a service with nothing wrong cost 2k -- what do they fill the engine with, liquid gold

it reminds me of the service manager at a VW dealer (mid 90's) looking at me and sighing, only to tell me that my Golf needed a new pedal rubber on the clucth pedal and it was going to be £9.00 for parts and £25.00 to fit (cant remember the exact figure but you get the picture)

in my head all i could see was a universal peddel rubber from halfords for £2.99

If you don't take it to MB dealers when the time comes to have the whole body replaced due to rust or the engine destroys itself you'll be paying yourself. Keep it Benz history and they'll cover most of those things (or just charge 50%). These things are the most technically advanced cars MB have ever made. The independants don't have the resources to work on them properly.

To be honest I would not do more than 4-5 k miles a year in it .
I got 20k out of a set of tyres on my Rb5 !! So not the craziest driver .Fuel not too bothered about .Service would not be MB due to their crazy charges,I would go to an independant ,already recommended by the salesman.

And the wife has just been asking me if we are getting it then !!!! Shes pretty keen .!!

Surely things you mentioned are worst case scenario and if that lot went wrong you would have to be the unluckiest cnunt in the world .
