PORSCHE BOXTERS
As above are they any good? i know they have a reputation for being a hairdressers car, but hand on heart, forgetting the image thing, are they actually any good to drive, are they reliable, expensive to run, insure or fix?
any help appreciated, dont bother trolling my post with stupid jokes about hairdressers either, all i want is true facts, perhaps from someone who has actually owned one or driven one.
thanks in advance
steve

I did a trackday in a 2.7 litre. It wasn't particularly fast. Handled OK but a bit soft. Even the current regular Boxster/Cayman still only has 245bhp, so less than most turbocharged Imprezas. A friend of mine has a Boxster "S" which seems much more impressive. Undeniably worth the extra money if looking for one second-hand.

Poor image aside (which is probably undeserved) they are very capable cars, read Blowdogs blog (GTR forum and Stuttgart 9's webmaster). He's owned some superb cars, currently has a 997 GT3 I think and had a boxter on loan which he rated very highly. He makes some good points

They are in a word feckin' brilliant.
I dismissed them until a buddy bought one and i drove it.
Its a proper sportscar, even the 2.5 goes ok if you give it some.
The sound makes the hairs on your neck stand up when you cane it
Handles great and stops even better.
Just watch out for RMS issues (rear main seals)
The only thing is they aint cheap, Ultra reliable but Tyres, Brakes, Servicing is bloody expensive as you would imagine. Fuel economy surprisingly good.

You need an S if your looking for performance IMHO. Also preferably the latest 987 version as looks far more aggressive.
Great cars and have a bad rep mostly from people who have never been near one or from the many owners you see pottering around at miss daisy speeds.
Many a person (inc myself) have had such preconceptions only to have driven or had a passenger ride in one and been totally converted. The handling is sublime and go-kart like. Sound of the boxer engine is excellent at full chat especially with the roof down.
If I had a budget of £40k Id buy an S tomorrow or actually save a bit more/ sell a kidney and get a Cayman S

Brother has an 05 plate Boxster S
Didn't rate it until he let me drive it
Absolutely superb for a 'hairdressers car'
If you can stretch definitely get the S, since driving my bro's i've driven a 2.7 which was

He did all the work himself, and found an engine for a very good price. Most Porsche owners buy new engines straight from Porsche so used motors appear to be quite cheap. I don't think he's too worried about the resale price as he plans to keep it for years.
