Default XR3i or Fiesta RS Turbo

I'm finally moving to a house with a double garage, which is giving me a serious itch to buy an oldish Ford for the odd bit of fun.

Both of these where cars I really wanted as a youth, but never got around to owning ( I did have the RS1800 and a S2 RS Turbo)

My heart is telling me to go for the XR but my brain is saying something with a turbo will be more fun...

Any thoughts guys?

I would consider other similar cars but it needs to be from the same era.

im an 80's ford geek, i prefer the look of the old xr31, but my fav is the mk 2 xr2, i had many and were great.
im sure i remember reading the steel used for early 80s ford car was quite poor quality from spain - and hence they rotted so badly. dont know how much truth in that though.

id opt for the fiesta turbo - finding a clean one at reasonable price maybe a challange, usually rotten or concours lol

I had an rs fiesta turbo for several years. The very definition of torque steer! Very fun car. Once you've had an rs it'd be hard to even consider an xr.

For me it would have to be the S1 RS Turbo all day & if money can stretch the Escort Cos is the daddy.

I had a Mk1 XR2, a Mk2 XR2 and then two XR2i's. My husband had an XR3i, but my XR2i was far more fun. My heart is with the Mk1 though. Do invest in an alarm, my first and fourth were both stolen, from different locations

I'd warn against buying an old car with a turbo unless you know it's been looked after - been there, done that with a 3.0l turbo Supra and blew it up after a couple of weeks

Post up whatever you get, I love the old ford hot hatches, had some great fun

I'd also love an S1 RST but funds won't allow, same for the RS1600i

I'd really like an XR3 ( non injection) but they seem very few and far between.

It's not going to be for a few months, so I have plenty of time to find the right one, Fiesta turbo is leading the way at the moment.

I'd go for the XR3, simply because I prefer it's looks over the Fiesta.
The three spoke wheels on the Fiesta looked terrible, I think they were three???

I used to own a Mk.1 XR3i, they were reasonably quick back in the day but the Peugeot 205 gti was still the king.

If you fancy an old fast Ford though, this is still the daddy.

I used to have a 1983 Lumo 105T which was a Mk1 XR2 with a Pace Turbocharger kit fitted. It was a very basic system, oil cooled turbo and no intercooler but what a great car. I wish I still had it. Just having the carb jets drilled out and a cherry bomb exhaust it gave 140 Bhp. The standard XR2 Mk1 gave 84 Bhp. Steve

The OE wheels on the Fiesta were terrible.

I'm not after a show car though so changing the wheels wouldn't be a problem.

You can't change the wheels! I loved the three spokes. Why would anyone want an xr over an rs? I had 2 xr fiestas, a 1.6 and a 1.8, both were nothing compared to the rs, and the alloys were worse and a right pita to clean too iirc.

Sold this a couple of years back, 1 previous owner FSH 30k as it left the factory. Boy do I regret it! It got looks where ever it went.

The only reason someone might want a 2i over an RS is the lack of unmolested thrashed turbos.

I'm selling my daily, one previous owner, low miler, fsh RS2000 if youre interested Looking for around £2k

Best of both...RS1800

RQB engine out of the last of the XR3s in the shell of a MK3 Fiesta (which technically is just a shortened Mk5 Escort).

Just ditch/sortout the EECIV ECU to get rid of the flat spots.

I had a black RS1800i loved it, so would like something I haven't had before.

The xr3 wont have a limited slip diff! Rs turbo all day just because of that reason. The 89 to 91 models were made of german steel. Look at the vin plate you will soon no wen half of it is in german. Iv owned 3 all grey s2 rs turbo escorts. I want another one myself. Look out for rust around the spare wheel well, sunroof, battery tray, fuse box, fuel cap as mentioned, the brake servo, round the rear window seals and the inside and outside edges of boot lid. Check for damp on the carpets as its a gud indicator of the state of the floorpan, check sills aswell as they are notorious. Wiring to headlights for signs of heat wear, electric window operation as the motors Are nackered these days,

Thinking about perhaps ill stick with my scoob
