While we are still deciding what to do about a regular competition / theme month / etc, I thought perhaps we should have an interim thread to show some recent pics off and to allow some feedback.
Seeing as I'm regularly guilty of not posting pics, I thought I'd kick off with one from last week:
(70mm, 1/100s, f/4.5, ISO 100)
Bit of self-critique - I've have liked to have seen the smoke spread out a bit more, especially in the lower left (might try some photoshop cloning when I get a moment to mess about), but it was dissipating pretty quickly. Some fill from camera left might have been nice too.
Some fill from camera left might have been nice too.
That would work for me, the coat on the models left looks like a shadow initially, where it's off the shoulder it could be a shadow of the boob and the extra bit of coat at her knees is a bit distracting.
And personal preference, I'd like a few Kelvin warmer on the model light but I really like that overall and am being nitpicky. Shooting for fun or assignment?
Will dig out some others later in the week in case the thread need revitalising!

Will have a tweak tomorrow evening, I think there's a touch of detail in the shadow that could be pulled out enough to differentiate it from shadow.
I'm trying out Lightroom; that was a pretty quick edit & I'm still kind of feeling my way round.

Good point. A quick nudge suggests it does look a bit better for it... will post a revised version tomorrow evening.

Just for fun... local strobist get together.
Assignment would be nice though... could do with someone paying me to shoot.

Should probably have moved car and camera to the left......next time
Here's a recent one of mine where I missed a great pic opportunity through not really thinking about it and not paying attention to the results I was getting. Shoot from fifteen feet to the left and a little lower down, it's got potential (and I've got a stack the same )....
Three shots combined in order to lose some ghosting and stray light.
All taken at
18mm, 30/1s, f/4, ISO 200
Super bright LED torch used for lighting.

Have you tried lighting up your engine bay yet and then do the rest of the car like you have done? If you light up the engine bay you can give the appearance of a see through bonnet which is quite good. Unfortunately my recent attempt of this is at home but I'll post up a shot later as it's something you might want to play around with. You will need a camera with a BULB setting to make the shot work though as you'll have exposure times of 5 minutes or so. Mine is still a work in process at the moment but the shot I'll post up will give you an idea of what I mean.
Also, only slight criticism I would give is the torch shows through the wheel so perhaps you could clone that out?

Reason: Spelling typo!
These are my pics. Unfortunately it was foggy and it had a knock on effect with the shot as the nearby lights were causing light pollution for me. However, you can see the effect I was going for and when I get some more time I'll get the shot sorted.
Both of these are 1 take shots and my photoshopping skills are non-existant but you could in theory get the same shot by using layers/multiple shots.
Scott W - you're getting there! I've seen the effect used in normal light but not with light painting, nice one, keep the progress coming!!
bootsy - that's cracking and really well shot for a white car in that location. At pedant level, I'd turn the wheels the other way and straighten the foggers but I like it, any chance of a higher res, I fancy that as wallpaper for a while (big Mk1 fan and that's a nice pic!)
Cropped a bit to tidy it up, upped the colour temp from 5500K to 6000K, and used a little fill light to show a little detail in the shadow side of the coat (pushing it much more seemed to introduce noise - might give it a go in photoshop, see how that goes).

I like that colouring much better. Shame there's nothing in the coat shadow to recover.
There is a bit there, but trying to bring it out pulled up the noise with it too, so I backed it off again.
Looking at it this morning, I think it actually shows a bit more on my monitor at home, but I'd say there's a fair possibility of that monitor being set a bit too bright.
Will try a reflector or another flash next time I shoot something like this to throw a bit of light back in.
Im a bit new to all this, its my first SLR & only had it a month. Hence Iv formatted the mem card & dont have exact data for shots! But I remember a bit.

Wish I had the patience/inclination to try these shots but I'm a lazy git. I like the red glow appearing from the inside, is that from the passing cars or some lighting inside?
What are you using to resize the pics? It's leaving jaggy edges so an alternate method would help the final result. (A bit of light on the wheels might help too.)
Nice to see the camera's getting creative use, you still happy with it?

Thanks for tips & comments Hank I though Id post up how Im getting on with the A200, in my original thread on which camera to buy. Should I buy an SLR & if so which?
The red glow inside the car is from the red interior lights my friend has fitted!!! Pimp style! Your right the wheels are barely visible in the pic
Im using a free bit of software at the moment called Piccasa for editing & hosting pics on Photobucket, which do you think could be causing the resizing problems?
Which proper editing software do you think I should start using?
Also excuse the dumb question: I save originals on my laptop,- if want to see the exif data on my laptop do I have to view the pics through the Sony software provided with the camera?

I'm not familiar with the picassa software but there's something doing a savage resize somewhere. (there might be a "resample" option as opposed to "resize", that would be better)
I like the picassa web albums (PB is just a bucket really) and that lets you organize your collection online as well as link to different sized images with good clean resizing.
If you're using picasa software for edits, might make sense to try the web hosting as well?
These are from the same photo, I didn't resize at all, the picassa fairies sorted it all and have done it quite well.
You also get easy access to the shooting data as well.
I found Picasa's OK in a quick "flick through to find a pic" kind of way, but I don't like how it really struggles with noise in low light photos and in shadow areas.
WRT EXIF... Picasa will show it if you right click on an image or thumbnail and select properties.
There's still a little bit on the bonnet edge, top of the door and front edge of the spoiler but they're in the original as well, did you just crop or is there some resize before upload too?

I think I know why. Originally I first did a crop in Picasa then I did a "recrop", which I think is not really a recrop but a resize. In future i will only crop & will not use its recrop feature.

This is terrible quality and taken on my phone camera but kind of atmospheric - me and Mrs Matt racing at about 35-40 knots back from the pub nr Falmouth before it got fully dark!
