If you are into DoF, have you seen the stacking software available?
It's a bit like taking a panoramic, only you take a few shots at different focal lengths, without moving the camera, and the software stacks them so your entire subject is in focus.
Becoming used in photgraphing things like model railways, for a more lifelike look, cutting out DoF issues.

Otherwise it becomes an 83mm lens, which is the standard portrait lens, afaik.

A prime lens is a lens of fixed focal length. Doesn't matter what that length is.
And a 50mm lens is a 50mm lens irrespective of the sensor format in use. The focal length doesn't change, just the amount of the refracted image that falls on the sensor.
Its like taking a picture printed on a sheet of paper and cutting off the edges. The size of the subject of the picture doesn't change , just the amount of the image you get.
Phil, the mk2 f1.8 50mm is a great lens for the money. I was lucky enough to find a good mk1 on eBay a while back.

Looked this up and you are right.
You learn something every day: I was sure that a prime lens referred to that lens giving the closest view to that of an eye without the camera present..........

Alcazar, the 50 used to be the 'standard' lens you'd get with film slrs of old. In one respect you were right My camera is full frame and the 50 really sings on it.
I have a 50 f/1.2 and it gets a lot of use - for instance, the shot of Angkor Wat reflected in the water in the Cambodia thread was taken with my 50, hand held too.
Only down side to having a very good camera which picks up great detail and owning a subaru is you start seeing the rubbish finish on the clear coat more in depth
