Default picked up a Canon 50mm f1.8 mkII lens yesterday..

from London Camera Exchange in Nottm. £89.99... the guy did it for £85

I've been looking on ebay and a second hand one went for £70.70 + £4.99 delvery last night.

So quite happy knowing mine isn't much more new and comes with 12months warranty.

Just need to try it out lol

Out of interest, what made you go for a 50mm?

Surely, if you are running a DSLR, unless it's full frame, your prime lens is 30-35mm?

It is unless you use DX format.........

Otherwise it becomes an 83mm lens, which is the standard portrait lens, afaik.

The nifty fifty is a great lens mate, you'll love the shots you can get with it.

If you are into DoF, have you seen the stacking software available?

It's a bit like taking a panoramic, only you take a few shots at different focal lengths, without moving the camera, and the software stacks them so your entire subject is in focus.

Becoming used in photgraphing things like model railways, for a more lifelike look, cutting out DoF issues.

LOL, I don't think stacking software would cope with photgraphing a kiddie.

A prime lens is a lens of fixed focal length. Doesn't matter what that length is.

And a 50mm lens is a 50mm lens irrespective of the sensor format in use. The focal length doesn't change, just the amount of the refracted image that falls on the sensor.

Its like taking a picture printed on a sheet of paper and cutting off the edges. The size of the subject of the picture doesn't change , just the amount of the image you get.

Phil, the mk2 f1.8 50mm is a great lens for the money. I was lucky enough to find a good mk1 on eBay a while back.

Looked this up and you are right.

You learn something every day: I was sure that a prime lens referred to that lens giving the closest view to that of an eye without the camera present..........

Alcazar, the 50 used to be the 'standard' lens you'd get with film slrs of old. In one respect you were right My camera is full frame and the 50 really sings on it.

I have a 50 f/1.2 and it gets a lot of use - for instance, the shot of Angkor Wat reflected in the water in the Cambodia thread was taken with my 50, hand held too.

My favourite lens is my F1.4 35mm one. Excellent resolving power.

But like most folk, I'm lazy, so the 17-55 F2.8 gets a lot of use too.

As for using these cameras, I bought a double DVD off e-bay with two guys SHOWING you how to get the best out of your D300. Money well spent.

I have a Sigma 50mm 1.4 which is brilliant.

I have to admit I struggled a bit with the nifty fifty. It was ok, but not great, although for the money it did a job.

Only down side to having a very good camera which picks up great detail and owning a subaru is you start seeing the rubbish finish on the clear coat more in depth

Got a Sigma Nikon fit F1.4 30mm lens for my D300.

I only use it when I need to, and that's been about twice, as above.
