Have been looking for an automatic watch for a while now and came across a company called Oris.The prices seem to be at the low end of the market,you can get an automatic for under £500.
My question is,are they any good,and in particular the movements.

Any opinions welcome

They are good but dont have any "Street cred"... But they are nice and different from the "I will have wot every other person has" brigade.

The most important part is the movement.Anyone know anything about it:)

Luke...i had a look at a few today.Ok,the straps are not very good,they can always be replaced,but considering they can cost around £500ish and a decent Breitling is £1200,a Rolex £2,500 and something like a Blacpain £7,000,then f*ck street cred.

If its reliable and the movement is a good one,thats good enough for me.If the movent is crap,thats another matter:)

I have an Oris and so does the wife. I love them, excellent quality, self winding, don't lose too much time, sweeping seconds hand. For the money and if you want a self winder I don't think you can go wrong. Not an expert with movements though but no problem at all with ours in 3 years. Wouldn't buy anything else. They even have a bit of history - oversized crowns so that WWII (or was it WWI) pilots could wind them with their gloves on.

Kin'ell, I would say that is very high end of the market for me - I love watches but struggle to justify buying one for £99 :D:D:D

Paul, mine loses a couple of mins a month (about the same as a friends Rolex and pretty normal for self winders), the wife's loses less. It stops after about 16 hours if not worn. Can't help you with prices.

Oris are good quality but now they are VERY OVERPRICED.....


About 15 to 20 years ago they were known as a "good reliable inexpensive watch".

Then everyone jumped on the quartz bandwagon, and they kept making mechanical watches.....

fast forward a few years and people start to return to mechanical watches.... Oris are still making them, and notice an opportunity... double their prices, and make a lot of money.....



If you want Automatic then look at Tissot, Omega and Rado.

All relatively inexpensive (Tissot the cheapest of the 3) all have an automatic model in their range, and all use EXACTLY THE SAME/VERY SIMILAR MOVEMENT AS ORIS. Although the Omega and Rado are finished to a higher standard.



Also TAG Heuer make an automatic..... again use the same movement.


How is this so?

The main movement manufacturer in switzerland is ETA/ESA, they make movements for the vast majority of "Swiss watches".

Most "manufacturers" these days only make the cases..... and some don't even do that.





BTW I am a watchmaker/repairer, so do know what I am talking about..... most of the time....

Oh forgot to say.....

The power reserve on an automatic watch (how long it will run when wound fully) is between 26 and 40 hours..... dependant on the movement type.



Most Oris will probably run for 36 hours...... although some Oris mens watches are fitted with the ladies size movement, this does not always mean it will run for less time.

Steve...The reason i mention Oris is

1.They do seem a bit cheaper than Omega/Tag.....you can get an auotomatic Oris £400-£700.Omega and Tag are more expensive.£1000 upwards.
2.I quite like the design of the Oris watches i've seen,the Tags i'm not so keen on,and the only Omega's i like are in the £1500 upwards range.
3.As for Rado and Tissot.....i cant say i've seen anything i like.

Anyway,my only worry was the movement.I know Oris may not be "street cred" but personally i dont care.If the movement is OK,as you seem to imply it is,then i may check them out further.

One of my manual watches is an Oris BC3. It's not anywhere as nice as either of my Omegas but is a cheap indestructible watch. It's been mountain biking, swimming, worn when building sandcastles etc, and has never missed a beat.

In short, a good quality watch, which to some eyes is plain, to others simply understated. I've had mine for around 3 years, maybe 4, and in that time it's been kept running virtually all the time (though only worn 3 days a week or so)and is extremely accurate. Tends to be accurate within a minute per week, though this varies.

I've replaced the rather unattractive metal strap with the Oris rubber strap (cost around £40) which is much better.

Can't remember what I paid for the watch - around £250 IIRC. The low price (compared to some of my others) means that I treat it a watch rather than jewellery, which is as it should be.

Rather bizarrely, I bought it from an Australian website!

I've got one of these and have been pretty pleased. It tells the time, date and looks fine ;)

Also, if you put it down for a couple of days it stops then restarts when you pick it up again.
