Lister Jaguar Le Mans XJS - what a beast!!

Saw a 15 year old one of these on the ferry going across Lake Windermere at the weekend.

It was a red wide bodied Jaguar XJS, but it had Lister badges all over it. So I got chatting to the owner and he said it was 15 years old, he'd had it for 10 years and was a special build by Lister, called the Le Mans version or something.

For an XJS it looked bloody great and sounded awesome.

We got onto figures and it was a V12 with 535bhp and 550 lbs/ft torque  He said the torque was so high you could set off in 5th gear and go onto 190mph in the same gear :D

He also said it did 10mpg!!

I didnt get any pics, but a quick Google gives:

There is a white convertible one in Andover as well mean looking thing.

MadMark 15 September 2004 09:29 AM

Yeah - used to know a guy with a couple of listers - one a LeMans like this and the other a white convertible with I think a 7 litre V12 ..... :D

If I remember rightly they also did a twin supercharged version with a 'SC' suufix in its name that developed 700bhp

I remember seeing one at Silverstone once with kid sized harnesses for th rear seats!

They also rebuilt a few XJC V12 Coupé as new cars with their engines and suspension etc fitted.

Regards

Robin

Saw the guy in the white one the other day fatman .........

Squizz 15 September 2004 01:06 PM

I used to see various versions of these tearing around Castle Coombe on the "Supercar test Days" organised by the De Tomaso Pantera Owners Club.

Seemed to handle and stop well, too - Not just rocketships!

Those were the days. :(

Nat 15 September 2004 01:07 PM

The classic car club in Birminghham used to have one of these but a cabriolet, i had it for a week and it was pretty fookin outrageous! Loud as and leary as too. Roundabouts were 'interesting' ;) Fuel consumption was heartbreaking i swear i used a tank going from brum to northampton to bedford and back to northampton - and the tank wasnt that small.

The Mini Daddy 15 September 2004 01:16 PM

very nice motor, ive always been a fan of the lister derived jags especially this one and the xj40 from the similar era

sweet ride!

ALi-B 15 September 2004 01:19 PM

Mental cars, only thing that let them down was the bodywork never seemed to fit properly (bad panel gaps etc).

We happen to have a Lister Valance and sidedskirt on our XJS...looks the dogs

Still working on getting the 500bhp, though ;)

JayBee 15 September 2004 09:12 PM

Yep

i had one of these from CCC brum as above. Fantastic!

Somthing to behold howling through the mountain passes around buxton and then through the mier tunnel in stoke......5 times :-D

what would scooby do 15 September 2004 09:17 PM

An old mate of mine used to train jaguar mechanics, he set up his own business yuning jags, porkas etc.. he said the daftest thing about the jag V12 was that you could liberate 50-60BHP just by porting the exhaust manifolds

The Mini Daddy 15 September 2004 09:22 PM

really man, god i wish that the same could be said for the a series mini engine

(imagine that, double the bhp (120bhp mini) starts masterbating over the thought)

ALi-B 15 September 2004 09:22 PM

Yup...he's right - exhaust manifolds are very badly designed

You can get a few more horses by dumping the intermediate silencers too :)

Next step is twin throttle body conversion on each bank (like lister ;) ) and say hello to another 40-50 odd bhp :D (Although you'll need to add fuel enrichment - cheap way is to re-comission the disconnected/removed cold start injectors with a supplemental ECU, or remap it instead)

Then we have the GM TH400 3 speed, XJR-S valve block, or a B&M fast road shift kit to and get even better response. Or better still a getrag 5 speed manual conversion and knock a second of your 0-60!

I'd better stop there, I know far too much about XJ-S's that I'd be here 'till the small hours ;)

what would scooby do 15 September 2004 10:15 PM

True - I was mucking around with Rover V8's at the time, and was gobsmacked at what he could do with an XJS :D

Dream Weaver 16 September 2004 09:29 AM

He mentioned he was moving to Zytec management (or something like that) for it to up the torque and MPG.

ScooByer Trade 29 April 2009 02:49 PM

I know this thread is from 2004, but just want to add that the 5 speed getrag gearbox in the Le Mans was from the BMW 7 series ( i didn't know that ) from a similar period. That red Le Mans on PH and Autotrader with 13k miles is still for sale at £40k

Turbo2 29 April 2009 03:10 PM

One was sold last week at the Bonhams Hendon auction just before the 2 seat Supermarine Spitfire. Details and price inclusing buyer's premium as follows. It has only 8867 recorded miles.

Cheers Turbo2 i was reading on a forum somewhere, and was mentioned that this one is in need of of tlc.The guy who was trying to buy it didn't buy this and bought a 90's shape AM Virage instead.I don't know who bought this Lister.

ScooByer Trade 29 April 2009 03:29 PM

That's the red Le Mans i'm talking about ScoobyD.

Dream Weaver 29 April 2009 03:32 PM

Holy Thread Revival Batman!! :D

I remember this day fondly, seems a long time ago now!!

Matteeboy 29 April 2009 03:40 PM

I remember seeing one - at first I didn't know what it was. This was the equivelent of Brad Pitt being told he is a minger. I was mortified (bit of a car IDing geek). But soon worked it out - phew!
The guy that owned it also had a Bugatti EB110, a Miura and a Countach, all parked in a hidden garage very near my old flat!

ScooByer Trade 29 April 2009 03:41 PM

Did you get to be a passenger in the Le Mans Dream Weaver ?. Would love to drive one of these or Listers XJ12 that would be sweet.

Dream Weaver 30 April 2009 09:58 AM

Afraid not, the car was on the ferry across Windermere parked next to mine, so I got a good look around it but no chance of a ride in it.

It sounded awesome when it drove off though IIRC. :)

ScooByer Trade 02 May 2009 06:39 PM

I know Nat21 had a memorable experience in one, going down a slip road in the wet. There is short vid of a silver one on a runway on youtube, also a foreign bloke doing a review of the same car. This is the Lister priced at £40k

ScooByer Trade 12 May 2009 11:15 AM

Oh just to let you all know the pedigree of this engine, it was used in the Silk Cut Jaguar XJR9 & XJR12 near the end of the 80's and into the 90's. If i'm correct the only difference between the engine in the race car & the Lister is fuel injection mods by Zytek & TWR for the XJR9.The engine developed 750bhp & 611 Ibs/ft of torque :notworthy:D i love Lister :thumb:.The XJR12 had a 7.4ltr derivative of the same engine, err i wonder how much horsepower that had:wonder: .All three engines i mentioned are NOT force fed via turbos or using superchargers. For those who own V12 Jags and Daimlers, the 5.3 V12 is the same block as the engine in the XJR9 & XJR12 so tuning is undoubtedly very possible. It's a road car engine made for racing and a fuel station is a must buy.

Don't forget this gorgeous Jag V12 supercar (XJR-15) from the same era, because a lot of people have or mistake it for the softer V6 XJ220:

http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w...uar_XJR-15.jpg

Who said Jag's V12 is a quiet & refined engine...?

NB: I saw a Maserati MC12 at a dealer's yesterday. :thumb:

ScooByer Trade 12 May 2009 05:00 PM

Zytek did the fuel injection for the 220 Turbo2.I'm very fond of the XJR-15 too, loved driving it in NFS 3 HP.The S3 E Type is supposed to be refined & quiet not.The Maser is based on the Enzo i think, hell of a supercar that.

ScooByer Trade 13 May 2009 12:52 AM

Imagine if the XJ220 had that 750bhp V12 or the 7.4 litre V12, without the 4wd & had stability control with traction control, that would be as fast if not faster than the Maclaren F1.Aerodynamically i reckon the XJ220 won all the top trumps cards. Also maybe supercharge it with Whipples finest.
