There are no Diesel Cayennes, prob the BMW 535 D or Audi A8 V8 Diesel,

according to the dba the best car ever made is the mk5 vw golf tdi with a tuning box running approximately 50 million bhp and it does 50mpg.

I have a 330d and a Golf GTTDi 140 and both are rapid cars once moving.

i used to have a m reg 1.8 lx td mondeo-and that was fast :Whatever_ but then again i drove it damn hard! :)

i take it thats a joke! the old mondeo diesels were dog slow and not rated at all!

i got the missus a mk4 golf gt tdi 150 and its very quick and torquey and i know a guy whos tuned his to 190 bhp and says its a belter.

i think the new seat deisel has a 7.9 0-60 time :confused:

According to Diesel Car Magazine the fastest diesel on sale is the BMW 535D closely followed by the Audi A8 4.0V8 TDi.

The Taureg 5.0 V10 TDi is the most powerfull but weighs nearly 3 tons and has the aerodynamics of a house.

Mercedes is presenting at geneva 2 new mercedes. Merc says they are only prototypes but it surely doesn't look like it. For others, I'm sure you will be able to find info on the web.


Mercedes SLK 320 CDI:

It's a new V6 with (hold to your chair) 3 turbos. They call it the TRITURBO (It's an engine like the 535d for those of you who know how it's like) Result? 286bhp and 680Nm. 680 !!!!

Mercedes SL 400 CDI: this just keeps on getting better & better...

It's a V8 with 315BHP and 730Nm. It's a biturbo. The numbers are mind blowing. Can you imagine 730Nm ????

There is a guy in the latest issue of bmw performance magazie with a 330d that has 305bhp and 594 lb/ft of torque. But it only manages the 1/4 mile in 14.5 not really that impressive considering the numbers, top speed is not bad at 160mph.

Out the box at the moment I'd say you'll struggle to do better than a 535d which has a twin turbo 3.0 engine producing around 275bhp and more torque than you can shake a stick at. Rest to 100mph is 14.5s so it would match or destroy a classic shape standard scooby in absolutely any test of acceleration other than 0-30mph. Consider what it might do with a remap :D Consider also if BMW put that engine in the lighter 3-series and you bought such a vehicle and remapped it. We are then talking about a diesel that is the match of a P1 and effortlessly so. Bold new world :D

Yep and GM who part own/share platforms and technology with Subaru already have a 2.0 litre sequential turbo diesel that puts out around 220bhp and 500NM with 90% of the torque available from 1200rpm. Unfortunatly it's running around in Vectra's at the moment.

Subaru have a big problem using flat engines but they already have the latest technology avialable to them.

I can only see diesel becoming more wide spread, it has greater thermal efficiency than petrol so you should always get more power for the fuel used. The efficiency gap is even wider on cold engines or light throttle loads.

The only drawback is the purchase price which also should come down as the technology moves forward and the number of units made increases.

IF that torque figure is right then I would think that lack of traction is the main factor in the 1/4 mile time.

The big penalty with these powerful diesel cars however is the nose-heavy handling that no amount of uprated dampers and springs can iron out. Straight line they're fine but will get unruly through corners and lack the agilty of their lighter-engined petrol brethren.

I thought I heard the 330D was lighter (as a whole car) than the 330 petrol - or is that wrong? Would suggest the diesel engine is lighter in this model (though granted older diesels are pretty hard-core cast iron).

No, the Diesel is just over 100kg heavier than the petrol

IIRC BMW still use cast iron blocks on their 6 pot diesels which would account for the extra weight.

But as I said before (with the 3 series verses 5 series) 100kg is nothing -especially on a car with near 50-50 weight distribution.

You beat me to it, was about to mention the near perfect 50/50 weight distribution on a 3 series. A 335D would be a storming car. The future's near, the future's smokey ;)

thinking about it a bit more, can you imagine a 135d? looks pug ugly but i can imagine it being a superb hot hatch with the right engine in it.

A mate has the Golf 150bhp TDI - nice motor but space wise it has nothing on the classic scoob - boot size is too impractical. My scoob can get 3 sets of golf clubs in the boot whereas the golf (fitting name) has to have the rear seat put down to get 1 set in.

We looked at getting one for the misses - but after seeing a few that had to have the parcel shelf taken out to fit a pushchair in we decided they were too impractical. So we have to make do with an Impreza Turbo instead :D

Did think about an Audi A4 - (same engiine as golf?) but it's too big a car for a 1.9 Turbo Diesel.

Don't see many diesel's running at the Pod !:D
