The twin-turbo diesel lump from the 5-series will be making its way to the 3's before much longer so there will be a 335d on the horizon...

The dragon boxes offer silly performance increases for the money. I've got a switchable unit on my Octavia, flick the switch on the dash and 25-30% more power for £200.

No Scoob beater but decent performance and 50+mpg, ideal for my 35k miles a year.

why do some people compare modern, tunned, high tech, more expensive diesels to average or slightly tunned scoobs etc?

Its hardly fair comparing a 330d to a Uk tubby?

Also, its often deemed embarissing to be beaten by a diesel, why? The fact that the owner of the diesel payed a fortune for it, yet a cheapish car can keep roughly in distance with it?

I was once beaten in my CRX by a Golf Gt Tdi, but felt pleased that my little motor kept in distance.

Any hows, im not a diesel basher, my father has a 2.2dci Laguna which I really like. Im just wondering, as I am a bit confussed, why the modern diesel is always, on SN anyway, compared to dare I say lower class cars?

Yep it's a bit unfair classing a £20k Scoob with a 330d or 535d. But look a bit further down the scale and there are other cheaper diesels that offer decent performance, some of which are nearer £10k than £20k

The Audi A8 4.0 V8 TDi has just been replaced with a 4.2 V8 TDi with about 15 - 20 % more power and torque too.

Not heard that.

Audi has nothing on the website, still showing the 4.0l :confused:

I was reading something interesting about Diesels very recently. Basically the refineries can't make enough of the stuff because they were all designed 30 years ago when only Farmer Giles was using Diesel and not Joe and Jane Salesman. Also Diesels are more expensive than petrols obviously, and the fuel itself is now not much cheaper, if at all, than petrol (regular petrol that is), so unless you're doing MASSIVE amounts of miles a year then a comparable petrol car will actually work out cheaper than a Diesel over the course of your ownership.

It's well worth doing the maths before you buy. Obviously comparing a scooby and a diesel isn't the right test, but say something like a Petrol Golf and a Diesel Golf.

I've driven a few diesels at work - Passat, Focus, Laguna (old shape, non-turbo, 125K miles, not so good), 406, Golf. The Passat was easily my favourite.

Agree with most of that but you also have to factor in the difference in resale value. Diesel is a tad more expensive than Petrol at the moment but the efficieny of modern diesels more than makes up for it. I save at least £150 a month on fuel myself but if you only do 5k miles a year then only buy a diesel if the resale equation works out though some people like modern tdi's power delivery and ease of driving.

skoda fabia vrs and a remap are quite nippy

on a conservative run I'm getting 60 mpg from a standard Fabia vRS.........fookin marvellous compared to other cars I used to own cough cough :)

I think you are missing the point a bit, mate. It seems a lot of people buy diesels for the low down torque, not necessarily the economy (although that is a nice side effect :) ). Look at the top Fabia...no petrol equivalent (as of yet).

Show her where the last three gears are. ;)

I can get 50mpg+ without trying in either the Octavia or Fabia although the wifes Fabia is a PD100 not a PD130.
Take it easy on an A road run and 60+ mpg isn't too hard, never need to go over 2000rpm if you are really trying, bit boring although you should edge towards 70mpg.

Never managed the magic 700miles on a tank in the Octavia but did get break the 650 barrier once. Full to red light is between ten and eleven gallons depending how much you squeeze in.

I would like a new car was thinking of gettnig a scooby but with the amount of miles (around 2k/mo)i do at the minute, it would be madness to get one.
I like the look of the fabia vrs but suspect it would be like driving a barge round the a/b roads?

Anything can be sorted, Fabia is a VAG clone so suspension and brake upgrades to suite every budget level are available.

I just drove a BMW 535 D - was told it was an alloy lump [not cast iron] and that 560 torque figure someone quoted aint Lbs/ft; Its newtons per hectare or something similar metric that means equally less to me! Was about 420 Lb/ft I think.

I was very impressed by it, if not the huuuuge extras list & the replacement run flat tyre costs.

This linkup sadly/happily has recently ended - GM sold its stake in Fuji Heavy Industries (owners of the Subaru brand) back to Fuji. Not yet sure what this means for the "Saabaru" or any other GM-Subaru linkups. Subaru does seem to need access to somebody's diesel powerplants, as they don't have the resource to develop their own.

Thought the BMW Alpina D5 was the pokiest chip fat burner??
