NEBOSH general certificate - Whats it done for you?
Hi, I am being made redundant at the end of the year so Iam looking at getting a NEBOSH general certificate. (I have already got my IOSH cert)
In real world terms what is this likely to offer me if anything at all? Cheers James |

Cheers James It's 12 weeks (1 day a week) and gives you an opportunity to sit next to a fit bird (if you can) and look down her top for 7 hours a day! :D Once you have it (and get a new job) people will then expect you to do loads of extra SHE related work for no additional reward, everyone will hate you as you stop them doing a job quickly and easily (as you make them now do it safely and it takes 10 times longer) and when someone gets hurt you're first in line for the investigation that follows (your risk assessment!)!... So go ahead and do it.... but try and avoid having to use it ;) DCI IOSH MS, NEBOSH and a load of other SHE training sh1te.... :smug: |
I did the 5-day IOSH Managing Safely course last week. Ok up to Wednesday then found it hard to concentrate for remaining days. Had a written test on Fri and an assignment which I completed during the weekend.
Our NEBOSH is a 3 week residential course. I suspect it's a killer so I don't fancy that one! Think I've learnt enough on H&S for now ;) Nick Nick |
I did mine around 6 years ago.... used to pop to the local pub for lunch... but I found it very, VERY difficult to remain awake in the afternoon!
"Safety" is about as interesting as "Quality" and those that believe it's actually interesting are sad, sad individuals.... but it's another line on the CV ;) |
Yes, safety is very boring but the way companies are going now its a massive thing (certainly in the bigger companies anyway). Thought because I have the IOSH MS I could do the NEBOSH and like you say DCI its an extra line on the CV and there seems to be some decently paid jobs out there that require it (currently in contract managements for a logistics co)
Theres a place in Manchester that do it over 13 days, two blocks of five with a week inbetween blocks, then a block of two for revision then exams etc on the final day (one day after the block of two) The IOSH MS was bad enough staying awake and that was only a 4 day course but again split into blocks of 2x2. And why is it there is always someone in the group who questions the tutor :wonder: (wasnt me :D ) |
Well woth doing ,i did it over 3 hours on a thursday night over 33 weeks .I am now working as a consultant for a notts based company specialising in work at height .

Consultant... that could also mean part time though ;)

30 hours a week sounds good to me, certainly beats my current 45hr week
|
I did my NEBOSH General Certificate 9 or 10 years ago. It's pretty much as others have said and pub lunch makes for a sleepy afternoon. Also had the fit bird sat next to me (took her out for a drink after the course too, but didn't get anywhere...) :thumb:
IOSH MS was much easier; more interesting too... the guy the took that course had loads of tales to tell that made the course seem more relevant to the real world. I've been trying to talk my boss into paying for my doing the NEBOSH Diploma, but haven't had much luck with that yet. 30 hours a week? I could live with that. :D |
Just joined to comment on this. I took my NEBOSH exams on Friday after 3 weeks of intensive tutoring. There was a number of times during the course that I wanted to give up as I just didn't feel like I was going to retain everything you need to learn, however having now finished it I am pleased I did it and I feel already that I have benefited from it, as have my work.
The Certificate isn't easy unless you have a basic knowledge of Health and Safety, an ounce of common sense, understand the law and are able to write. That might seem a strange thing to say but I have colleagues here that have failed because they can't put into written format what they want to say and NEBOSH mark you down for simply answering the question as a Statement if they have asked for an Outline answer - odd I know! So do the course as it is a recognised standard but be prepared to work hard. |

Good insight.... although have you been lurking for months waiting for a thread on NEBOSH to coincide with you completing the same course?
*spooky music* :Suspiciou My good friend Scooby Sue sent me the link as she thought I would be interested - especially the comment about 'fit bird' as I was the only female on my course which got some interest!!!!! |

Although you do realise that you'll have to back this statement up with photographic evidence ;) |

You've got to be joking - I've heard about you lot on here from the lot on the S2K forum ;)
a) Not so fit b) Trans-gender c) On the way to being b) d) Regulars "pretending" So as you can see the mature way to deal with this is to pop up some "readers wives" style pictures of yourself, that way we can then assess your "babeness" which in turn will allow a more considered response to your posts Attachment 61887 |

I keep thinking about doing my NEBOSH, work did offer to pay for it. Problem is, I already work for the Safety Dept of a well known large construction company, as an engineer surveyor (carrying out independant examinations on plant) and I know they will expect me to also then work as a safety advisor with no extra money. So I get the NEBOSH, but they expect me to do 2 jobs for the same money! I dont think so, stick to my 25-30 hours a week!

Proby We have a H&S department who are stretched already with our construction sites and unfortunately the workshop gets forgotten - so I've done it to have some knowledge and be the 'competent person' but in return I've asked for recognition. What harm can asking do? |
Went down the trade union route and completed the stage 3 in occupational health & safety. 30 odd weeks of day release has allowed me to register with IOSH at technician grade (awaiting confirmation).
Looking to turn poacher to gamekeeper as the qualification is a double-edged sword - it makes you want to put all of your new found skills & knowledge to good use, which you can as a rep (to a degree), but you also want to be the one making the decisions and getting the wedge and recognition for it. |
I did the NEBOSH National General cert about 3 years ago now - did most of it by distance learning (sending assignments into a college-based tutor) then went to the college for 2 days to do the exam.
I was already working in the H&S department of our company (did my IOSH MS a couple of years before) and it was definitely a good course to do. I found distance learning to be a really good way to study - my boss has recently completed the NEBOSH Construction Certificate and found the content to be 99% similar to the General Cert. |
