You need a 75w-90 for the gearbox and diff. http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-...ion-fluid.aspx If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Red Line 75w-90NS and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Universal/Universal Plus, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives. The Fuchs Syn 5, Millers CRX, Redline 75w-90 GL5, Motul Gear 300 and Gulf Competition are ideal for the diff. The Fuchs Sintopoid, Castrol Syntrax Longlife, Millers TRX, Motul Motylgear, Mobil SHC and Gulf Syngear are also good choices. Cheers Tim |

Shockproof is supposed to be the best stuff from what I've heard - a number of friends with STIs that developed a crunch in a particular gear found it was cured after switching to Shockproof (although I suspect it's probably a little late!)

Lightweight Shockproof is really good stuff, definitely something to consider, but I'd say the Gear 300 is probably the best proven one that we sell for the STi. The 90PA is ideal for the diff. Cheers Tim |

For a 6 speed box that has developed a very slight crunch shifting down from 5th to 4th iv hear that the best thing do use is mix red line shockproof and motul 300? can you tell me what ratio of them to use and wether to use the heavy or lightweight redline? |
Not sure why people are mixing them, not sure there is much to gain. I would just use either one or the other.

Can you tell me the best oil to use for a p1 rear diff. please ? Bearing in mind it is a Suretrac fitted to the p1 so a mechanical lsd. I will be using lightweight shockproof in the box but is this the right grade for the rear diff? |
Are you planning to use the lightweight shock in the diff? If so it will be fine, it is happy on 75w-90, 80w-90 and SAE90 it just needs to have the lsd friction modifiers in it.

A bit shy I think, 5qrts is 4.73ltr and you will need 4.1ltr for the gearbox and 1ltr for the diff.

Thread resurrection! I've just broken my 3rd 752 box in my semi facelift, 97 UK turbo and will be getting a 754 box in there next week but would like to get some oil ordered up tomorrow, preferably from Opie. Would the Gulf Competition stuff be as good as/ better than Syntrax Long Life?

A lot of people like the Syntrax Universal in Impreza boxes, but it is only a semi-synthetic. Being a semi, it does a good job of absorbing sound, so would make sense that the noise is reduced, but it will not offer the same level of protection as the Gulf Competition (and as the Gulf is ester based, it's pretty good at quietening things anyway). Got the oil and it shall be in the box and on the car next week all being well :thumb: Just to confirm, the 754 box needs 4.1L of oil then does it? I had precisely 4L of Syntrax in the box I just broke :idea:

I don't know how much empty space there is in that box, if there is loads, an extra half a litre isn't an issue. If there it only something like 750ml of air in there, then an extra 500ml of oil could cause a problem by putting strain on components. Cheers Tim |
Reference the amount of oil for a 5 speed, depends how much is emptied out, on fitting my replacement box it was emptied fully, tilted, lifted etc , so was pretty empty, i needed to put 4 litres in to the get a reading on the dipstick to the top small hole.
3.5 litres only just put oil on the bottom of the dipstick HTH |

I don't advise the use of oil additives as a lot of them are harmful, others are just a waste of money. The Molyslip is a bit different though. It's been around for years and there is moly in most oils, so it's not like you're adding something completely different to the oil. The issue is that there will be other chemicals in the Molyslip that are used to make the paste and you can't tell how they will react with the oil that is in the gearbox or how increasing the level of moly will affect the behaviour of the oil.
