Best self-programmable ECU for EJ20 Bug-eye (JDM)?
 

I bet this question has been asked a million times already, but I couldn't really find one specifically for the Japanese STI (EJ20) :D.
I'm looking for one where I can make my own map up as soon as I get upgrades (is this even possible?), I've been looking at the AEM EMS (FUNKY POWER - Europe's Leading Online Japanese Car Specialist) which seems to be perfect for what I'm looking for. Am I right in thinking that I could simply plug my laptop in to it and tune it on the fly?

Would rather go for a solaris, simtek or an autronics ecu. These are known quantites and have much better mapper support.

Without meaning to sound like a prick, if you are asking about which to buy your prob not the man to be mapping it.
I am by no means an expert , but SimTek and Autronics seem very popular, but as with a lot of things its as much the man on the computer that make the difference as the software itself.

If you are interested in the DIY approch , look into the OpenECU end of things , very interesting even for just information purposes and if you do go that route it will be a lot more cost effective than an aftermarket ECU

Your own ECU is pretty clever and as said you can change maps on that with ease.

Thanks for your responses guys :), I have no idea about which model is best but on the computer and technical side of things I can do pretty well (Computer Science student) so that's not a problem! Just finding the best one :), I think I'll read up on those models see what people say and see if I can find any tech documents.
And Stig I'm not sure I understand what you are saying but from what I know these don't replace the ECUs they simple piggy back and send signals to the standard ECU, is that what you mean?

What JDM Stig is saying is that many of the OE ECU's fitted to Impreza's offer plenty of capacity for remapping without going standalone. And that includes the ECU you have fitted to your JDM Bug STI.

Standalones are simply OTT (benefit vs cost) for the majority of tuned Imprezas.

Do a search for Open Source Impreza Mapping, especially about ROMRAIDER and ECUExplorer, and you should be able to dig out all the information you need.

i have my jdm sti 03 ecu map with openecu by a tuner and was able to push out extra 70hp from standard ecu. really happy the way it runs now. only mods was a downpipes/catback exhaust n dropin filters

Your Denso OEM ECU is a pretty capable ECU and much better than the JECS in the old classics :D

If you want to do your own mapping then I'd buy the kit to map the ECU already in your car :D

Tactrix cable and ecuflash and to raider is the easy way or ecuedit is another but you really need to have a good idea about tuning principles if you want to mod the map yourself, a good mapper is worth the money in my opinion, only reason I looked into it was that on my old wrx I fitted all ppp parts then flashed a ppp map to the car so was no different to paying the £1600 at the dealers just that it cost me less than £300 all in and was great, any custom tuning needs the knowledge, equipment and a fair bit of time to get it right where a mapper with Subaru experience will get the results much quicker

Hydra ECU is good and have this feature:Auto Tune and some other ECU,but still your OE ECU have amazing features which are easy enabled via EcuFlash,RomRaider etc. and Tactrix cable,but still i would rather pay someone to map my car just due one reason,have car mapped safely and properly..
