"Oil Rocks" - Soviet city at sea
Facinating place, shame its now in such poor condition!
45 km offshore on the Caspain Sea, Oil Rocks is unique in the world, a pearl of Soviet ambition built in several phases after 1947. Oil Rocks is a full town on the sea: it has 200 km of streets built on piles and landfill. There are tall blocks of flats, a bakery, a cinema, a garden, and a school. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Q-PuSGjFHv...oily_rocks.jpg http://media.englishrussia.com/oil_stones/3.jpg http://media.englishrussia.com/oil_stones/2.jpg Oil Rocks (Neft Dashlari, Neftyanyye Kamni), oil city in the Caspian sea, Baku, Azerbaijan English Russia Oil Stones: A Soviet City in the Middle of the Sea Neft Dashlari - Wikipedia SOCAR Section: Oily Rocks: Legend and Reality*Seyyad Ibrahimov I'd love to have a visit there! |

Jaybird, cheers for posting that, very interesting and makes a change from the usual narrow range of threads we have on here.
Anyone else got anything interesting like that ~? This place is worth a visit if you are in Cheshire Hack Green |
I've always found Varosha in Cyprus quite interesting. Due to the fact that no-one can decide which half of the island the city belongs to it's been fenced off for about 30 years with no-one allowed in
52 Pictures From The Abandoned City Of Varosha In Famagusta, Cyprus | djmick: V2 Also Centralia in the states. In the 1960s a fire started in an underground coal mine, the ground became so unstable (and hot) that the town had to be abandoned. The fire's still burning today and they predict it will do for the next 250 years. Surely its one quarter of the city is Famagusta, not simply Varosha? Ive been inside: much to my girlfriends concern (only a little bit though: I didnt saunter through the streets or anything). If you circumnavigate the perimeter youll find some shockingly poor areas: it was like the West Bank! The 'keep out or we will shoot you' signs will fit perfectly in your suitcase btw.

I would feel very restricted if I lived in a place like that. No beach either.
