castrol magnatec 10w 40,good or a bad oil

hi all,
iv just done my six month oil and filter change, now i have been using hallfords own 10w 40 oil for the past year as reccomended by them, anyway iv just droped the old oil and put castrol magnatec 10w 40 in, can somone tell if this is a good or bad oil for my car witch is a 1997 impreza sport, and if it is a bad oil in what way is it a bad oil and will it damage the engine in anyway.

thanks in advance,,gazza http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...lies/thumb.gif

If the car is standard - its is fine. Any oil that meets the manufacturers spec is fine in a standard car. Just check the levels once in a while and change it frequently.

gazza1455 05 April 2010 04:47 PM

:thumb:hi m8,yes the car is totaly standard apart from the induction kit,the rest of the engine is all standard, thank you for your advice..gazza :):thumb:

dj219957 05 April 2010 05:52 PM

that oil will be fine.

TonyBurns 05 April 2010 06:00 PM

Magnatec is NOT recommended, you should try millers, motul, shell, mobil 1 etc over this.

Tony:)

Steve001 05 April 2010 06:32 PM

what put a smile on my face is............he asked AFTER putting it in! :D

BTW i have used magnitec in my stanard 02wrx its done 130K with no problems

Setright 05 April 2010 06:45 PM

Magnatec is a good oil. No worries on using it for normal driving..spirited driving even.

I would not use it for trackdays.

scoobmj 05 April 2010 06:55 PM

i use it in my modified classic, running about 295 bhp and its been fine for a year now

dj219957 05 April 2010 07:04 PM

Tony, its a sport so i dont think oil brand is that critical, main thing is hes gone for the correct grade. Why would he wanna spend mega bucks on millers, motul, shell, mobil 1 when hes already said hes been using halfords own.

gazza1455 05 April 2010 08:56 PM

thank you all for your comments,im nu to all this and i would like to improve with the maintenance ov the the car and to futher my understanding ov just how complex these engines are ,
so therefore im looking to you guys for the best advice possible,
thanks again,
gazza :):thumb:.

Magnatec is NOT a good oil for subaru's, even engine builders dont recommend it (and some of the top mappers).

Tony:)

New_scooby_04 06 April 2010 10:59 AM

I would use it...... in a lawnmower! ;)

Use the good stuff for your Subaru: a Proper fully Synth like Silkolene Pro S or Motul or Millers. If you have a look on the Subaru specialists websites, you'll get an idea of what they use and I'd be gobsmacked if any advocated Magnatec.

Steve001 06 April 2010 11:18 AM

without going fully synth, what oil is used by subaru dealer? 10w60 but what brand?

scooby1929 06 April 2010 11:28 AM

Subaru dealers probably use what the book states semi synthetic 5W-30.

For a Subaru Sport castrol magnatec is perfect

For a Turbo I would use millers or silkolene 5W 40

If I was doing trackdays I would use Millers 10W 60

TonyBurns 06 April 2010 01:50 PM

10w60 is too thick, a w50 is about as high as you want to go in a standard or slightly modified car, on a full rebuild 500bhp+ monster, yes run a w60 as your temps get it to a nice runny mixture, a w60 is about 50% thicker than a w40 at 100 deg, thats alot of drag on your engine and the oil pump has to work harder.

Tony:)

Steve001 06 April 2010 03:30 PM

just chosen shell helix 10w40

waits for the slating ;)

non-modded car

scoobyboothy 06 April 2010 06:04 PM

the oil debate goes on LOL

can someone actually recommend an oil for normal driving with a bit of spirited driving thrown in now and again for me?

It's MY99 uk turbo

cheers

The Rig 06 April 2010 06:14 PM

well, 24k so far, 5 oil changes (everyish 5k) used magantec 10/40 for everyone, not heavily modded but enough, engine good (touches wood/rabbits foot)

Funny how its not recommended yet for every engine failure on here, how many are running the recommended oil and still have failures (for 1 reason or another)

I run Motul 300v 15/50 in my classic, fantastic product !:notworthy

nick172sport 06 April 2010 07:21 PM

subaru recomend 10/40 semi synthetic

dj219957 06 April 2010 07:34 PM

i would like to hear the evidence which shows that magnatec causes failures or why its "not recommended" more scoobynet bollox I reckon.

oh god! another oil debate!

oilman 06 April 2010 08:38 PM

The Magnatec 10w-40 semi synthetic is much like any other well branded 10w-40 semi out there, if a little over priced compared to its competitors.

To the OP on a Impreza Sport it will be just fine with regular changes, certainly better then the Halfords own 10w-40.

If in the future you want to go better then try a 5w-40 synthetic.

Cheers

Guy.

happydude303 06 April 2010 09:13 PM

just though id say i use castol fully syth 10w 60 in my and it running 390bhp on a FORGED LUMP and it has been fine and i give it the beans every other day : > i reckon i could use 10w 50 or 15w 50 but im sticking with what i now but these oil thread dont half go on : >

lol. That's exactly what I thought!

jaytc2003 07 April 2010 07:22 PM

there is a new magnatec out that is fully synthetic (10W40) to tell if if you are getting that, on the label the old semi synth magnatec will have A3/B3 the new version has A3/B4. This is in retail now.
If you want to stay semi synth then look for GTX with the same A3/B4 suffix (A3/B3 GTX is a mineral oil)

oilman 08 April 2010 12:42 PM

Yes, but it's not a proper synthetic. You can do better for your cars

jiffthejiffmanjaffa 08 April 2010 01:16 PM

SO what we're saying is 5w/10w-40w/50 for a standard to slightly modified car. Always sythetic for a turbo, semi is fine for normal aspirated.

I think that sums it up :-)

oilman 08 April 2010 05:19 PM

Pretty much. To be more specific, 10w-40 for standard or near standard classics, 10w-50 for modded or thrashed ones, 5w-40 for standard up to quite heavily modded new age, 10w-50 for heavily modded or track only new age.

what isnt??? the new magnatec with the a3/b4 suffix is (I can even tell you the date it first arrived in the uk :lol1: )

oilman 09 April 2010 01:53 PM

It isn't a true PAO synthetic, it's just like the Magnatec 5w-30 that they label as synthetic, but it's such a low grade synthetic, we describe it as a semi. It's a hydrocracked mineral oil based sythetic and a basic one at that. If it was a top end oil, they would call it Edge.
