Got the compression results the other day, not quite what I was expecting... Cyl 1 - 102, 2 - 130, 3 - 110, 4 - 130.
We'll have to wait & see what reveals itself when the heads are off.
Also found out that the dealer fitted Bosch plugs on the last change, not impressed.

At 64k I would change the friction plate, release bearing and flywheel bearing. It's too much of a job to jot change them. Just consider not replacing the cover plate assembly.
your compression results are worrying. You may be able to see more when the heads are off but don't count on it. I replaced my head gaskets and was disappointed to not see any damage.
I don't want to worry you but many others have advised a bottom end rebuild while the engine is out.

Finally the rebuild is complete.
As previously mentioned the head gasket on the left (cylinders 1 & 3) had failed, but turns out the loss of compression on that side was due to leaking exhaust valves.
Bores were in good condition and the pistons didn't necessarily need replacing, but I decided not to risk the possibility of a future ringland fail and get forged pistons fitted.
So heads, blocks & flywheel machined. New bearings, Omega pistons, proper head gaskets, head studs as well as all the other usual stuff like oil and water pumps, modine, cambelt etc and of course a new Exedy clutch plate, cover and bearings.
Collected it today and it runs as smooth as silk, just got to run it in for a 1000 miles, have an oil change and then back to business as usual.
I can't thank Howard at HDC enough for being able to fit the job in amidst all his other work, for his help and advice and for putting up with me constantly mithering him!
That said, I can feel nothing but contempt for Subaru and their use of what can only be classed as substandard parts on these engines.

well at least yours is sorted now , i agree very poor of subaru and not even honest enough the accept the issues , if you are american then you seem to be having more luck than the uk over this , why could they not base the 2.5 more on the 2 litre as far as spec allows and have similar reliability

2009 STI Hatch, standard other than PPP which was fitted at 2000 miles old.

Only had it for a month and covered 500 miles :wall:.

To be fair to the previous owner, there were no signs of it going until just now when started to knock under load.

I know what you're all thinking - I've thrashed the hell out of it being a new car but that's not the case. I've driven around like miss daisy and spent a small fortune on servicing myself since owning - oil change, coolant flush, new plugs etc.

Sorry to all those that have had to put up with these failed 2.5 engines.

To save me searching and reading all the reports on the net about these failed 2.5 Subaru engine issues, why have Subaru not been held more accountable, it's basically a rally pedigree car that should have a strong engine, this doesn't seem the case from what has been reported by owners.

They simply don't care about customer loyalty and customer aftercare/service.
they didn't move with the times hence most modern diesels will show the latest wrx sti a cloud of dust.

Think the best some got from them was the ****ty engine replaced with another ****ty engine. Was a very "lucky" few mind you.

subaru’s engine failures were certainly part of their decline in sales , they did not get the diesels right either with the broken crank shafts , and now it’s appears difficult to get a new performance subaru

that and the fact Subaru Europe are not interested in performance anything anymore they will focus on the Forester and Levorg as thats where the money is, bland as they are its what they sell now.

No coincidence the engine has essentially been the same for more than 20 years, its not worth investing in.

No its not really a rally car anymore Prodrive didn't even use the 2.5 lump in the works cars and I believe Subaru Rally team use a 2.0 as well.

The production of JDM version WRX, WRXSTI and Levorg models has currently ended and production for Australian and US versions (fewer emission restrictions than Europe) ending, I believe, with the current MY21.
A new JDM Levorg is due for release at the end of this March with hopefully WRX and WRXSTI to follow later this year and next as MY22/23 versions ??.

Whether or not, any will follow to Europe we will have to wait and see.

Are the 2.5Ls in the 2014-19 final edition Sti as bad as the previous ones or were they strengthened changed following all the issues?

Yep, almost exactly the same engine with exactly the same issues with Ringland and head gasket failures. Plus I've seen quite a few suffer from oil pickup pipe failure leading to oil starvation. Another thing to worry about. :)
