Removing classic rear bumper
Does anyone know of a guide or some advice how to get a classic rear bumper off
Thanks darcy |
Try searching "bumper", and selecting the "search all posts" (not threads) parameter and also entering "APIDavid" in the member field too.
Then check the list of threads that show up. Dave, reasonably recently, has mentioned in detail to another poster how to remove/fit bumpers... |
Darc it easy mate. :thumb:
Undo the obvious arch clips and number plate light, undo the rear bumper bar bolts under the car they go through the exhaust hanger in the one side :) Gentle shuffle it out and remove all the hidden black clips, shuffle it back a bit not to fall off and the bumper will release. Will put some pics up in a min. |
...Or take 53WRX's advice. :D

Bumper bar bolts... http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u105/BMGC/7.jpg http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u105/BMGC/6.jpg Shuffle it out...if it doesn't shuffle you missed an arch clip/bolt clearly the bumper edges bolt into the chassis/arch :) http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u105/BMGC/5.jpg http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u105/BMGC/3-1.jpg http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u105/BMGC/2-1.jpg Shuffle off leaves the bumper bar... http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u105/BMGC/4.jpg ...once you have done it a couple of times you will be an expert like me :D;) |
Top man cheers stu :D I will give that ago in the week, so it's justthe arch and bumper bar that hold it on
Cheers Darcy |
On my MY04 STI I had to remove some of the boot lining to get to some bolts that held on the bumper. Don't know whether the classic is the same?
|
Nah classics is all external :D
Aye, basically arch clips and of course the tip of the bumper thats bolts to the car proper. Number plate lights and the hidden clips which are access by undoing the bumper bar :) What you doing as if its a quick job I don't mind doing it for you :) |
I'm just swapping my rear bumper for a new one as mine as a few scratches on it,
I'm starting on the body work now |
Cool. It's pretty easy, you'll get a feel for clip resistance if you miss one :)

I'm doing this exact job this week to fit my diffuser... saw those plastic clips in the nook where the top of the bumper tucks in under the bottom lip of the boot and was worries about how the heck to get them out.
So it doesnt seem like you need to worry about those? Just the corners and bolts underneith... I'll have a crack on Tue, cheers Stu :) |
Once you have the corners, one or two clips underneath the rear, and the bolts out, the whole unit slides out of the "chassis" legs. The clips you can see on top are just to hold the bumper skin onto the actual metal bumper bar. Don't fforget numberplate wiring connector as the bumper starts to move, disconnect it BEFORE it takes the weight of the bumper.
You can see the bumper BAR on the bottom pic, above, it's grey. |
