Knocking/clunking noise's???? HELP!!!

I own 05 sti.. The problem is when I reverse off my drive theres a knocking noise, then as I'm driving through the gears I hear it again from rear and sometimes the front?? It's mainly when I take my foot off the accelerator it does it. It ain't the shocks cos I've had them done as I thought it was this!!!

Mines done this ever since I've owned it, if the noise is the same. Its like a metallic "click", doesn't sound too nice but also doesn't sound massively awful. A bit like something is engaging, and it usually does it when driving off, like a gear or something is engaging underneath the car, or the prop shaft connecting with something. Its much louder when the windows are down. Sound like the same sort of thing?

And mine is also an 05 STi.

Diff maybe.
Have you ever had box and diff oils checked/changed ??

Is the diff the thing that costs £2000 to fix if it goes wrong?

If it is, i'd rather just ignore the noise ;-)

This also happens if you fit non OEM brake pads. Its where there is movement in the calipers. I know cos its just happened to me, but the clicking sound is mostly when reversing, only a little going forward and all at slow speeds.

Ahhh thats interesting, I know there is EBC Redstuff Pads on mine (which were on there when I got the car). And it happens just like when you describe it, going forward slowly, and reversing, and although it doesnt sound nice, it also doesn't sound like anything going badly wrong!

I really want to know if thats what the OP's problem is as well!

I have clicking also noticeable when changing gears at low speeds and also taking foot off the accelorator been told its the rear diff. my car has quite high miles though done 84,000.

my classic was doing the same turned out to be knackered drop links luckily for me

My car has started to do this and it's more than likely a worn propshaft with excessive play.

How expensive would a worn propshaft be on a 05 STi? Are we talking mega bucks, or a few quick to replace it?

Well mines only done 37k miles??? It had diff oils changed last year! Any way got it booked in next fri.. Doesn't sound like pads.. Hopefully droplonks

Droplinks you will notice when going over speed humps and big ditches in road. The clicking I and the other guy are getting is due to the pistons hitting the brake pads, which are not a perfect fit.

When I got my car, just 2 weeks ago I didn't have this problem at all. But since chanign the rear pads I've got the clicking and an annoying whirring sound when driving over 50 mph.

If the noise is only there when you apply the brakes it's probably the pads sliding inside the calipers, not OE items.

If the diff click/clunk is only in reverse it's probably the diff cogs meshing when you engage reverse and drive.

You may well have had the shocks done but did you get the mounts checked? There is a bearing in the top which may have gone?

If it happens when you take you foot off the loud pedal then it could be weight transferring forward and could be the drop links. Try a bit of copper grease first :thumb:.

Be methodical and check from back to front :thumb:.

It's more than likely the DCCD diff, nothing to worry about, They clunk on full lock/reverse

Mine has started to make similar clunk noise as described above but not pads or links as these have been changes very recently.

Clunks at low speed when getting on and off the accelorator but also when in neutral coasting at about 10-20mph????

Had a Subaru specialist look at it but they're scratching their heads. Had probe to it on the ramps, been out in the car hanging out window to listen etc. No excessive play in shafts etc

Concluded nit gear box due to the frequency of the clunk (thank god). Thinking either CV or drive shaft????

Will update if we ever get to an accurate diagnosis ;)

Mines worse say when I'm doing about 15-25 mph let go of accelerator and click! Power back on and then off again click!!
It's doing my head in and on reversing it only does it as soon as I take hand brake off and apply power "click" then that's it!!!!!

would the drop links be at the front and back?

My bug had developed a clunk when on/off accelerator at low speeds. took it down to FB tuning swapped out the rear shocks for new KYBs and changed the rear diff hanger and outrigger bushes. The clunk has now gone, although I am not sure what, exactly, solved the issue!. Richard advised me that if it didn't go, next things to look at would be drive shaft and CV joints. :thumb:

Check the rear hub nuts are tight as they sometimes come a bit loose and cause a "click"when taking up drive,I have seen this many times on STI's....it only needs to be a fraction loose and it will click.
