Default RaceDynamix STi - Time Attack 2009

New year, new project .....

following on from last year's project: STI for Time Attack 2008

Plans have taken a while to set in stone and while there is still an awful lot that is not finally decided and lots that will change during the year, the general direction is clear.

The main emphasis will be: Lower, Wider, Lighter.

However the main changes include:
- ECU to enable me to run a 5th injector to cope with fueling for pure E85
- suspension modifications
- weight reduction and lowering of C.O.G.

Whilst still retaining it as a daily driver and a car that I can drive over to the ring - that is going to be the challenge.

Power is currently 545 bhp & 603 lb/ft so no slouch but the work will make the car more rapid on track and competitive within Time Attack 2009. Pilot improvement will also be a main part of the programme

I have been very fortunate to get some great support for this year - more on those later when the graphics are applied but I really appreciate the help, support and assistance given by all.

First port of call is off to ABW Coachworks in Essex (autobodyworks Subaru Bodywork) for some widening and custom work. Daren and the team there will be waving their magic over the car and handing back something unique, distinctive and fit for purpose

This year really starts tomorrow when it goes down t there - cant wait

Progress pics will be added as I go and will be shown on the new Race Dynamix website Race Dynamix - New website coming soon... (once I finish building it .... )

I remember that when it came out - maybe it just stuck in my memory

More Fuel:

I have been sorting out how to fit the extra injector for the past few days. This will be fitted into the FMIC piping prior to this entering the throttle body. I will be using an 850cc side feed injector and half of a std fuel rail from a classic impreza to hold the injector in. This will be mounted onto the FMIC piping and using wiring from the Tumble Generator Valve mechanism that was removed from the car, the new ecu (Solaris for those interested) will be able to send a signal down this wiring to fire the extra injector 4 times more than the current primary injectors. ie fire it once for each cylinder.

This is needed because at the 40% mix of E85 that I run at the moment I top out the 850cc injectors at 106% IDC even with fuel pressure turned up to 4 bar static pressure. I can't go any higher on the fuel pressure for fear of heating the fuel up too much and 1100cc injectors are rare and unreliable. I will be running 100% E85 so need another approx 20% fuel than I have now.... ie another 680cc - 850cc should give me some headroom.

Sorry to burble on but although I am not chasing extra power with this element, I believe that a little bit more will come from purely the change of fuel and the higher energy content within E85 (and some more from additional timing)... possibly taking it to a combined 1200 for bhp & torque. We will see.

Duncan,
Who told you 1100cc injectors are unreliable..... I have had no issues with mine whatsoever and the car runs absolutely fine on them? Many people suggested they would run like a bog-o-****e, but I have not had any such problems since on Hydra.

Surely they either work out of the box or they do not, using basic logic (regarding reliability).

Am I missing something?

DeatschWerks who made them have now discontinued them. They are very rare and expensive although RCM have them available for £680.80

I think I can do the 5th injector solution for a lot less than that and get better idle, fuel control and road manners.

Convert to side feeds and you can get some flow matched and reliable 1100cc injectors for sensible money...

All options have been considered including this .... but it still cheaper/better to go for a 5th injector

Duncan,
Fair point on the cost.... did you not speak to Iain Litchfield about the ones he got me from the US? Richard Bulmer also run's 1100's on his car, and he did not get them from Iain, so not sure where he got them from.

FWIW, the idle, fuel control and manners on mine are spot on. The ONLY issue is a very slight (and I mean slight) feathering at part throttle at 2300rpm. Does not matter what Richard does he is unable to get shot of it. They were however terrible on the OE ECU, but that may of been down to a mapping issue.

I hope you get it all sorted, regardless of which way you want to go.

Personally I think you are very wise not to look at going for more power by means of other major changes. It only makes any potential repair bills possibly more costly.

I didnt speak to Iain - no idea why.

I agree Shaun. If it happens by accident by being able to target better afr's then that is great but major changes cant be afforded and with the majority of the rounds so close to each other I cannot afford to spend the days testing and debugging major work and getting used to driving it like last year. It was gutting to waste 3 rounds with issues that should and could have been resolved.

Default 5 th injector

nice to see threads like this duncan

about the 5th injector

i totally disagree, i think that a good eight injector set up would be far better than a 5th injector fitted in fmic pipework, also very good idle on eight inj set up, agreed far more expensive but lets face it when you get to the 550+ hp i realy dont think that the difference in cost would be that much of an issue.
you have obviously thought of this idea but i just thought i would put my 2p in.
hope your car build goes all well
i will see you on 25 aprill
i am in club chalenge what group are you in

Club Challenge too Andy.

8 injectors is not going to happen - I dont think they are required and will quadruple the cost for no additional benefit (all IMHO). This is not an unlimited budget track only TA car like some running race fuels - i really have to look at the cost versus benefit of everything that goes on.

you've got me worried i'm going to start maxing out my 6 820cc injectors now that we're tinkering with E85 :O

Might have already asked you this on other forums Duncan, but what is your target weight?

PS - 255's.... ptfff, Fee was running them all last year Might see about gettig a slight arch roll and getting 10" rims on the go.
