As an overspill from another on-going thread on SNG I was just wondering: how many people have actually experienced wheel failure on track or road and what brand of wheels? Personal experience please rather than hearsay!

Seen 2 pairs of inovite rip off stuff crack around the spokes and one rota physically crack on road use.

Also got 3 cracked alloys on my vxr (std vauxhall)

Not a failure but the finish on my xxrs is crap.they are cheap for a reason. They are sh1te.
Luckily being a **** wheel they are easy to sell on and buy a decent set.

Not only cheap wheels, BMW had major problems with their 19s found on e90/92's a few years back, used to get loads in that had cracked, I don't think very low profile runflats helped..

Some very interesting information and potentially life saving if you take it to the extreme. I wouldn't have thought twice about getting some wheels powder coated, just goes to show.

My car had inovit replicas when I bought it. When I went to get new tyres the tyre fitter pointed out a crack across one of the spokes which you could see daylight through. Steve.

Brother had a Redline PFF7 replica fail on him, have a look at the shape of the wheel on the picture, this was hitting a pot hole at 30mph!!!

PFF7's are rocketship money and crack quite readily. Cheap doesn't always mean weak, infact it normally means they weigh half a tonne

Had OE, powdercoated and painted and never had a problem. You can never be sure the stresses a wheel has been subjected to in it's lifetime, refurb implies they have been kerbed or well used

I buy most wheels new and my Rotas were all spot on. You can't really criticise a second hand wheel which has been powdercoated and failed and blame the make IMHO. I know loads of people using Rotas for track and not heard of any failures bought new. If they fail, they fail for a reason such as impact or poor workmanship on refurbishment.

The WRX wheels that Nigel had crack regardless of powdercoating. Maggs I believe had 2 OE WRX wheels in that were cracked. It's not the evil people make out, the quality of the process is only as good as the outfit doing it

Powdercoating is certainly a better longer lasting finish if done properly, but painting suits a pretty wheel more show bound

Although the finish could have been better, the wheels I put through Lepsons for various people have all been abused on track and survived since 2008

I've had wheels powder coated without issues, my pal who does them for me has coated hundreds of wheels for all types of vehicles and uses. He's never had a failure to his knowledge.
I think the wheel failures you see/hear about come down to cheap poor quality wheels themselves and/or poor powder coating methods.
Some of these replica wheels like the one above can be bought for peanuts, if you think a brand spanking new set of wheels for under £400 is going to be decent quality then you're very much mistaken.

I had a brand new fiesta St hit a pothole punctured two pirrelli p zero tyres and buckled two wheels. Was out in sunny Norfolk after loads of rain. Although cost me over 700 to put right but got money back from council so that was a bonus.

IMO tyres-or rather profiles have a lot to do with this subject,any tyre with a 35 or lower profile, regardless of diameter has virtually no sidewall,therefore any contact with even a minor pothole on our tremendous UK back roads is going to result in some kind of damage-at the very least tyre damage,but more often than not a bent,buckled or cracked wheel.
