I've just made the decision to buy my first Scooby. I know nothing about them and so far think I've narrowed my choice down to a WRX Estate (mostly to get my bike in and out and keeping it secure).

Is there a buyers guide anyone can recommend, or any obvious dos and don’t?:wonder:

Wagons a good buy for tranporting light gear about. With the back seats down plenty of room for a bike and a toolbox. With the seats up carry 5 in comfort all with 3 point seatbelts. Check the usual things:- Engine no smoke
pulls well when on the turbo, no strange noises etc. Bodywork in good condition. Get a good one and you will enjoy, get a bad one as with anything else you'll pay through the nose.

not a problem. Look around this site and prepare to part with thoasands on a little Japanese car that can (with the right medicine) outrun most cars, even supercars. Seriously you gotta spend a fair bit for that. Nevertheless welcome to the place where you will meet the owners who have cars that can and can show you how your wagon can do the same. If you want it to. Prepare to be overwhelmed, disappointed (with what you have), and begin to push you car to its limits (they do screech) and literally reach supercar levels.

i started with a wagon , well im on my 3rd now and ive had 1 saloon .I loe them my fav subaru classic by far but thats just me , its a great allround car that has the added space and isnt that much heaveier than a saloon i dont think .

Excellent all-round cars IMHO. I had one for a short while, and it was really good. And I honestly didn't notice any difference in handling to the saloon.
Also used to carry a bike on roof rack. (Which I may have for sale if you're interested ;) )

Great choice, perfect family car whilst still being quick and now cheap. You should get a decent low mileage bugeye for £5k, best advice I can give is take your time to find a decent one, it's a buyers market. Pistonheads seems about the best place to look.

I can't think of anything that is as practical and fun for the money.

I'm not sure what they're worth these days but try and get a later one (1998 onwards (MY99) as they have a nicer interior and produce more power with the Phase II engine.

Am trying to learn more about the differences between UK and import models. Found a couple of FAQ's, next step is to test drive a few.

subarujimmy - I may take you up on that offer when I've got something to attached it too ;) if you've still got it then.

My plan is to use the wagon as an everyday drive and later next year get myself another one of these

Yes I think I should spend a bit more and try and get something circa 2000 [ish].

The JDMs have things like air con, electric-folding mirrors, etc. as standard trim.

Why is there a power difference between the boxer master 4 and the phase II?

According to all the stat tables posted here and on other sites, the out put goes up every few years of production. I think the first version started with 240 BHP or something.

Get yerself I wagon - I just got hold of my first impreza wrx wagon (bugeye) a few months ago and it's like punk rock except it's a car. Gets the kids in, gets the drumkit in, gets the bikes on the roof and it still turns heads! Why did I never bother before??
