VF23 was the 22B turbo and designed for a larger capacity (2.2 litre) IIRC, ball bearing like the VF34. Don't see many about and will now be getting a little old.

I'd go for a more modern jobby as above

Going to bump this as I've found it in a search rather than starting my own thread.

Want to get my 97 UK Turbo 2000 to 300bhp. Already decided on most of the mods, I got it pretty much standard and have fitted a HKS induction kit and a Revolution full 3" decat. Goes well now but I need more! Plan is yellow 440 injectors, Walbro pump and the new V3/4 ESL daughterboard, but I've had mixed advice on which turbo to choose.

If money were no object I'd spunk four hundred quid and go for one of Andy Forrests hybrid TD04s, so I could keep the low down spooling of my current TD04 but have the capacity for 300bhp+. However the budget is very limited, I only bought the car for £800 so want to keep the prices as low as possible!

I'd almost settled on a 2nd hand TD05-16 with a front entry conversion from Andy, but then I've been told there are quicker spooling turbos out there and I should be looking for a VF35? So what should I do, I'm not after massive power so I want the smallest turbo possible of cracking the 300bhp mark, and the TD05 can be had from £60 upwards second hand, plus another £60 for a FE housing. £120 compared to £250 odd for a newer VF35, is a VF that much better?

You paid £800 for the car.
Out of interest how many miles has it now covered and what's the service record like.
Asking an old unloved car to withstand 300+ bhp will only end one way chap.

I know, but I've got a spare gearbox on standby!

And it's done 100k with full Subaru service history up to 70k and independent specialist after, was serviced 3k before I got it but I did it again anyway using Castrol GTX. Runs spot on and I did get a bargain, bought it off a guy who'd lost his job and couldn't make his rent that month, he was crying when I drove it away

Anyway, what turbo would you suggest?

VF24 will make 300bhp maybe more amd can be picked fro arround £200-£250 used. A very quick spool.

One of the smaller vf series, 24/28/29 are probably best, 30/34/35 will give you slightly more bhp, 22/23 are big old beasts and you will have more lag than any of the others mentioned (plus they are quite fragile).

+1 for the above vf24/28/29 are 3 of the quickest spooling turbos in the vf ranges and all capable of 300 bhp+

Would the vf turbo need a fmic or is it safe to use a standard tmic?

You can use a std tmic if your not looking to go over 330bhp
