Not sure on Subaru gearbox builds, but for a nissan we have had a customer who bought bearings for under £100, build was £150, fitting was £80, that still doesnt take you to anywhere near the figures your talking about.

Helical syncro kit should feel just like stock, but with more power handling capability.
