I the noise comes and goes and gear selection is fine then i do doubt it is the gearbox internals (bearing in mind i haven't actually heard or tried it). I would look to something rubbing on the gearbox, the selector mechanism, gearbox and engine mounts and also exhaust rubbing and also if something (debris from the road) has become lodged.

Do get the gearbox oil level topped up ASAP!
